Final (?) Update: Dec 24th, 2010: After accepting a promotion a few months ago, I realize that I don't have the time to devote to regular maintenance of this thread anymore. On the bright side, reflecting on the evolution of the Avenger class brings me great joy. When I first started this thread, Avengers were generally considered to be a 'bad Striker', and Ignis Fatuus, kilpatds, myself, and a few others spent a great deal of time defending them in various threads. At this point in time, they are typically acknowledged to be effective and flavorful, and are a very popular class.

Thanks to everyone who has participated in this thread since its inception-- particularly Ignis Fatuus and kilpatds, who have been amazing resources for Avenger players since 'back in the day'.

I'll still be around, of course.

Recent News: May errata batch kills Avenger/Pit Fighter. Morninglord nerf appears to be a given in the next 2 errata.

More Recent News: July Errata murders crit fishers who generate multiple free action attacks with each crit.

No worries, however! Avengers now have the feat support they used to lack, which means that building effective Avengers no longer requires leaning heavily on Paragon Path features!

This thread has really evolved a lot, but the intent and function basically remain the same: To keep tinkering with the Avenger class and put out fully functioning Avenger builds. Some of the builds are very straightforward and intuitive. Others boldly go where no... well... you get it.

Contents List
Post 3:
1. Elf (Pursuit) Avenger/Serene Initiate/Demigod. A Power-Attacking pure Avenger build that deals automatic damage on misses, as well as giving damage boosts to hits after missing the previous turn. Refer to post 307 for the new iteration of this build for more damage.
2. Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Radiant Servant/Demigod. Divine Retribution, Radiant style.

Post 4:
1. Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Radiant Servant/Demigod--with a Rending Urgrosh. An exercise in showing how Radiant Servants aren't married to lightsabers, thanks to Bond of Retribution.

Post 9:
1. Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Storm Sentinel/Demigod. Something for the Kord-lovers. Another build that isn't married to any weapon, and has COOL POWERS.
2. Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Blightspeaker/Demigod. Fun with (save ends), and self-heals on crits.

Post 33:
1. Hasdru's "Blink". Human (Pursuit) Avenger/PMC Swordmage/Arcane Sword. Huge DPR, At-Will charges, and a very unique flavor.

Post 34:
1. Godlike Devil's "The Silent Lord". Half-Elf (Pursuit) Avenger/Thuranni Shadow Killer/Chosen. A crit-fisher with Wraithblade Double Sword.
2. Ignus Fatuus' Eladrin (Pursuit) Avenger/Zealous Assassin/Chosen of ______. The revised version of this build, which has been changed to remove homebrew elements, appears in Post 338.

Post 37:
Deceased

Post 41:
1. Deva (Unity) Avenger/Radiant Servant/Radiant One. A 'focus-fire' oriented build that has big personal DPR, and also helps a flanking buddy out with accuracy and damage boosts.

Post 49:
1. Victimoffun's Dwarf (Retribution) Avenger/Radiant Servant/Punisher of the Gods. Maximum Bond of Retribution, and serious punishment.

Post 51:
1. Hasdru's Revenant (Hybrid) (Retribution) Avenger|Cleric/Avenging Haunt/Raven Consort. A very interesting build featuring heavy armor, and living with one foot in the grave.

Post 63:
1. Human (Retribution) Avenger/Wizard of the Spiral Tower/Sage of Ages. Using triple-rolls and The One Sword to create strong DPR and virtually permanent single-target daze.

Post 64:
These 2 builds rendered obsolete 3/2/10

Post 69:
1. Revised "The Silent Lord" build by GodLikeDevil.

Post 87:
1. Revision of Hasdru's concept of playing with one foot in the grave. Shadar-Kai (Retribution) Avenger/Avenging Haunt/Raven Consort

Post 88:
1. Obsid's spin on Hasdru's Hybrid build. Revenant (Retribution) Avenger|Cleric/Avenging Haunt/Raven Consort.

Post 93:
1. Hasdru's Human (Hybrid) (Unity) Avenger|Ranger/Hybrid Paragon/Beastlord. Unity with a built-in flanker. Fantastic solution for meeting Unity conditions and cashing in on build features.

Post 103:
1. Hasdru's Wilden (Retribution) Avenger/Long Night Scion/Winter Sovereign. An insane blink-fighter/teleporter who leaves pain in his wake.

Post 114:
1. Human (Unity) Avenger/Angelic Avenger/Radiant One. Automatic Radiant punishment and Combat Advantage against any bloodied enemy within 5 squares.

Post 115:
1. Hasdru's revisions of his cold-teleporter concept.

Post 116:
1. Human (Retribution) Avenger/Battle Engineer/Radiant One. Triple-stat dipping for obscene statics, and guaranteed accuracy kickers and bonus damage after any hit OR miss.

Post 124:
1. Hasdru's Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Morninglord/Revered One. Turning Channel Divinity into a supernova... and ending Epic with 11 Channel Divinity feats to keep the fireworks coming.

Post 126:
1. Hasdru revisits the Avenger/Storm Sentinel. Longtooth Shifter (Retribution) Avenger/Storm Sentinel/Avatar of Storm.
2. Hasdru's Dwarf (Retribution) Avenger/Lyrandar Wind-Rider/Avatar of Storm. 'Bends' a racial convention in order to tackle the Thunder & Lightning damage theme, and finds some nice damage output as a result.

Post 128:
1. My revised Avenger/Ardent Champion/Eternal with Rending Urgrosh, adding Radiant feat stack

Post 129:
1. Hasdru's Shadar-Kai (Retribution) Avenger/PMC Wizard/Archmage. Staff-fighting Missile madness!

Post 133:
1. Sticks128's Elf (Pursuit) Avenger/Ardent Champion/Demigod. Another take on this soon-to-be standard build.

Post 142:
1. Hasdru's "Cold Saves The Queen". Elf Avenger|Wizard/Battle Engineer/Winter Sovereign. Crazy damage output, sweet nickname.

Post 146:
1. Deva (Unity) Avenger/Wizard of the Spiral Tower/Sage of Ages. "Bedazzler". Striker DPR with virtually At-Will daze.

Post 154:
This build rendered obsolete 3/2/10

Post 155:
Deceased

Post 182:
1. Hasdru's Dwarf (Pursuit) Avenger/Serene Initiate/Perfect Assassin. Hasdru returns with a hard-to-kill little person.

Post 191:
1. Human (Unity) Avenger/Warpriest/Radiant One. "Scorpion Zero". Cold and Radiant synergies.

Post 204.
1. Ironchef's Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Zealous Assassin/Demigod. A hard-charging build whose damage ramps up when the target is bloodied.

Post 210:
1. Hasdru's Eladrin (Pursuit) Avenger/PMC Ranger/Lorekeeper. Twin Striking death machine.

Post 212:
1. Darklink69's Githzerai (Pursuit) Avenger/Ardent Champion/Demigod. The Ardent Champion build with a Gith twist and racial feats, as well as an emphasis on charging.

Post 227:
1. Human (Unity) Avenger/Twiceborn Leader/Radiant One. Fully functioning Striker with a heavy minor in Leader.

Post 230:
1. Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Draeven Marauder/Planeshaper. Low At-Will DPR, but decent actual damage, emphasizing control via push, slide, and prone.

Post 238:
1. Dwarf (Pursuit) Avenger/Hammer of Judgement/Demigod. Frost cheese + Censure's Grip combine with extra push/pull/slide ability to let you bulldoze enemies around the grid, and abuse them whether they run away or remain adjacent to you.

Post 241:
1. Half-Elf (Pursuit) Avenger/Coiled Serpent/Eternal Seeker. Beast form fun and increased control without straying from pure Pursuit Avenger playstyle.

Post 307:
1. Elf (Pursuit) Avenger/Serene Initiate/Demigod. The New, Improved version of the concept, now with much better damage.

Post 338:
1. Ignis_Fatus' Eladrin (Pursuit) Avenger/Zealous Assassin/Punisher of the Gods. A new, markedly improved version of her Greatspear charger, with homebrew elements removed through use of new content. Lots of charging, huge mobility and damage.

Post 356:
1. Elf (Pursuit) Avenger/Favored Soul/Chosen. Fun with flying and Distant Vengance, gets you Censure of Pursuit virtually every round with a little finesse.

Post 359:
1. Deva (Retribution) Avenger/Self-Forged/Radiant One. An exercise in squeezing functional damage out of flavor-oriented concepts.

Post 367:
1. Mirtek's take on the Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Favored Soul/Chosen of Tempus. Flavor-heavy build that functions and FLIES.

Post 377:
1. Deva (Retribution) Avenger/Simbarch of Aglarond/Sage of Ages. Triple-rolls + Power Attack + Radiant feats + non-Standard attacks + Simbarch's 11E = BIG FUN!

Post 433:
1.Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Ardent Champion/Sage of Ages, with Rending Urgrosh + Two-Weapon Opening. conservatively estimated at 140 At-Will DPR.

Post 461:
1. Avenger/Crimson Hunter/Eternal Seeker. Greatbow user who specializes in RBAs and powers which can be used as such.

Post 474:
1. OpenPalm's Avenger/Long Night Scion/Radiant One. Avenger melee combined with teleport & auto-damage shenanigans. Off hand 'Staff of the Traveler' turns Overwhelming Strike's built-in shift into a teleport for extra punch.

Post 500:
1. Ignis_Fatuus' Eladrin (Pursuit) Avenger/Zealous Assassin/Invincible Vanguard... a charger that uses Polearm Gamble to encourage its target to attack someone else. This one is right there in the 100 DPR club.

Post 545:
1. SongNSilence's Half-Elf (Pursuit) Avenger/Ardent Champion/Eternal Defender, w/Twin Strike Dilettante. A Str/Wis multi-attacker with Chain, Windrise, an axe in each hand, and 196 At-Will DPR (255 with Dancing Weapons, doable all day long)

Post 566:
1. l33's Half-Elf (Pursuit) Avenger/Ardent Champion/Fury of the Wild with Twin Strike Dilettante. An 'Adept Dilettante' based monster that puts strong hits on every unbloodied enemy within 10 squares each time it crits. Oh, and... it crits a lot.

Post 585:
1. Toxicated's Half-Elf (Twin Strike Dilettante) Avenger/Morninglord/Radiant One. Twin Radiant Bastard Swords and near constant Radiant vulnerability plus Radiant Advantage and Radiant One = 154 DPR. Another one in the 100+ DPR club!

Post 598:
1. Toxicated's Shardmind Avenger|Seeker/Morninglord/Radiant One. Distant Vengeance helps turn Grappling Spirits into a 100+ DPR attack with very strong control.

Post 602: *Moved from Post 2.
1. Longtooth Shifter (Pursuit)  Avenger/Ardent Champion/Eternal Seeker. A nova build.
2.  Longtooth Shifter (Pursuit) Avenger/Ardent Champion/Demigod. A pure  Avenger with crit-driven multi-attacks and Radiant madness.

Post 620:
1. Ignis_Fatus' Wilden (Pursuit) Avenger/Ardent Champion/Invincible Vanguard. Another charging polearm wielder in the 100 DPR club. A truly Archetypal build.

Post 647:
1. Toxicated's Longtooth Shifter (Pursuit) Avenger/PMC Ranger/Martial Archetype. I'd recommend using this one only in Epic tier games. Slow starter with no AC until it picks up Heavy Armor at Epic, achieving extreme DPR via Twin Strike.
2. Toxicated's Half-Elf (Pursuit) Avenger/PMC Rogue/Martial Archetype. A visitor from Windrise Ports that brings Twin Strike via Adept Dilettante, and brings some extra non-Standards. Another slow starter, though this one pays lip service to defense early on. Another member of the 100+ DPR club.

Post 648:
1. Ignis_Fatus' Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Favored Soul/Chosen. Strong defenses become absurd with easy to meet conditions. 66 At-Will DPR, and a nova in the high 600s. Oh... and at-will flight.

Post 653:
1. Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Adroit Explorer/Demigod. Striker with heavy Defender/Controller secondary ability and high defenses. Lockdown, served with two d20s on the side.

Post 679:
1. maverick0023's Deva (Pursuit) Avenger/Ardent Champion/Soul of the World. Generates 3 extra attacks per crit, and uses its Epic Destiny to poach some very useful powers. Post 680:
1. Hasdru's revised (Unity) Avenger|(Beastlord) Ranger/Paragon Hybrid/Beastlord. Bring your own flanker for Unity and CA.

Post 710:
1. Hasdru's "Holy Skirmisher". (Pursuit) Avenger/PMC Seeker/Fury of the Wild. Creates range-based catch 22 to guarantee extra damage, and is range flexible.

Post 713:
1. Hasdru's "Swarming Death". Human Avenger|Druid/Paragon Hybrid/Raven Knight. Hasdru proves that there's an exception to every rule by creating a martyr that isn't a trap, and also... one that I don't hate. In fact, I kinda like it! Censure of Retribution, done the right way!

Post 745:
1. Hadru's Human Avenger/Relentless Slayer/Demigod. I never thought I'd see the day... someone made Relentless Slayer work, and it works VERY WELL here.

Post 750:

Inferenz' Razorclaw Shifter (Pursuit) Avenger/Moonstalker/Invincible Vanguard. A similar version of IgFa's take on the same frame, giving up some damage for control elements.

Post 781:
Githzerai (Pursuit) Avenger/Storvakal/Demigod. Classic & current Pursuit-style Avenger emphasizing Defender secondary via Deadly Draw + Censure's Grip. 80+ DPR.

Post 813:
The_Yakk's Half-Elf (Pursuit) Avenger/Ardent Champion/Eternal Seeker. A late-bloomer who dumps Wis in favor of Str. Twin Striking & power-poaching chainsaw using vuln: Radiant.

Avenger Builder's Grab-Bag List: feature, feat, item, and power synergies to help your build.
Note: I haven't thought of a fantastic way to organize this section yet, so it'll be a work in progress. Bear with me, and expect to see changes. For now, I just want to start breaking these up for people.

[color=red
It's Gettin', It's Gettin', It's Gettin' Kinda Hectic[/color]]

Snap likes to use Power Attack + Bond of Retribution + Holy Avenger for At-Will: +34 vs AC, 2d12+1d10+41 damage

And makes use of:
-Punishing Radiance + Pervasive Light
-Font of Radiance + Punishing Radiance
-Triumphant Attack *and* On a miss, Snap deals 5 damage (Certain Cut/Serene Edge), as well as adding 5 damage to damage rolls until the end of his next turn. In other words, 2d12+1d10+38 damage on his next Power Attack/Bond of Retribution hit.

4. Human Pursuit Avenger/Radiant Servant/Demigod
-Radiant Fullblade to apply expanded crit range to any attack. Weapon of your choice if you use Bond of Retribution as your go-to At-Will.
-Uses Radiant Vengance for your 3rd At-Will, and makes it awesome (especially if you use a Holy Avenger)
-Radiant Advantage + Censure's Grip synergy!
-This build provides every Pursuit Avenger's dream come true: a way to encourage enemies to trigger your Censure, and increased damage even if they don't.
-This build exceeds the 60 At-Will DPR benchmark that we've been discussing in my CharOp thread when you factor in Triumphant Attack, Font of Radiance + Punishing Radiance (or the even better alternative--your target runs away, provoking an OA, and Censure bonus the following turn!), etc. Even before those, without weighing everything in, I have him at 55.53 DPR just standing around chopping things with BoR.
-In addition to the normal Striker-y single-target DPR, this build brings a few extra goodies to the table. Radiant Servant gives him some very lovely area-impacting attacks, including the awesome Solar Wrath. He also has a 12U which is great for out-of-combat healing, and increases party DPR via Radiant Advantage.

Edited again to adjust itemization in light of Adventurer's Vault 2. This is my personal favorite, and it's the build I'm actually playing as of the date of this post. I would play this again and again. Very fun.

The Divine Retribution Business:

Currently in the Editing process.

This section assumes a Radiant Weapon. If you want to use something else, by all means, do so--you'll just use Bond of Retribution as your go-to At-Will, and your At-Will DPR will remain solid.

At-Will: Overwhelming Strike, +36 vs AC, 2d12+36 (counting Radiant bonus, Power of Strength, Painful Oath)

-Hits grant Combat Advantage (Radiant Advantage), which also makes target unable to shift (Censure's Grip), AND gives you +2 to all defenses (Defensive Advantage)
-19% crit rate
-Crit magic:

1. Target -2 to all defenses until end of the encounter
2. Font of Radiance
3. Punishing Radiance (which tacks on Pervasive Light) Thanks to Radiant Advantage + Censure's Grip, your target can't exit the zone without provoking unless they have move powers which specifically allow for full moves without provoking. Their choice: Hold still, taking 3d6+10 damage at the end of their turn, -OR- move, provoking an OA which probably has your Censure bonus tacked on. If they don't move away and provoke Censure, it means they moved around you, remaining in adjacent squares, which still provokes an OA, and means you don't have to go anywhere to abuse them on your next turn. The bad guy obviously stands to take a lot of extra damage if it tries to get away, but that's part of the beauty here. If he tries to get away, your damage goes nuts. If he stands still, you've got him controlled, and are still dealing bonus damage. Further, as long as you're hitting, you're effectively at +38 to hit his defenses, and you're at 49 AC, 41 Fort, 43 Ref, 44 Will against your target.

***Added after Adventurer's Vault 2-- Symbol of Divine Light magnifies Punishing Radiance by 5, for a total of vuln 15 Radiant. Ring of the Radiant Storm is amazing.

Edited to add:  It just kind of occurred to me that taking Twin Step at 22 allows you to do some fun things. For instance, lets say you enter a room, and you spot a prime target behind a big mob of minions...
(move) Twin Step-part 1. Teleport into the midst of the Minion Army
(standard) Solar Wrath
(minor) Oath your target
-Twin Step-part 2. Teleport to a square adjacent to your OoE target.

It also occurs to me that Radiant Action 'ticks' will deal an extra 10 damage on turns that follow a critical hit, and that every 'tick' will grant you automatic Combat Advantage until the end of your next turn.

More on Twin Step... you can also make showy moves with it by doing something like...
(move) Twin Step Teleport away from your OoE target
(standard) Radiant Brilliance @ your OoE target
(minor) high-five your cleric
(free) Twin Step Teleport back to a square adjacent to your OoE target

You may be asking, "Auspex... why would you want to do that?" The answer, my friend, is... style.* *extra points if you make 'double guns' with your hands, point them at a buddy, and go "eeeyyyyyyyyyy!!!" like the Fonz.
Human Pursuit Avenger/Radiant Servant/Demigod... using a Rending Urgrosh Updated May 6, 2010

-This one is basically a mash-up of two other builds in here, and it's put together in part to show how you can make great use of Radiant Servant without a Radiant Weapon, just by using Bond of Retribution as your go-to.
-TWF feats, and almost all of the Radiant goodies.
-Generates 2 extra basic attacks per crit, in addition to the normal Radiant stack.

I really like your build especially 4
you know you spelled your own name wrong?

Hazzard of using different variations of the same name at various sites. I'm more used to typing it as it appears in the title.
I'm currently using a build similar to your 4th, though in heroic levels (I'm going to start one at 1st level in a game soon to roll and played another at 4th level), and I must say that it plays amazingly well.

I guess I'll tkaea shot at your TWF builds when I get a chance. Thanks for all the info :D

Viva Chile mierrrr...!!!

Thanks for the feedback, Fiexe and Otakkun. I appreciate it!
These ones are for people looking for something functional, but a bit more exotic!... ...aaaannnndddd, this first one is actually also for me. I won't get to play it right away, but it's a concept I've been wanting to make work for a bit, and I think I've found a functional model.

The Lightning Business

-Power of Storm gives us +2/+3/+4 static on Overwhelming Strikes
-after sticking one Overwhelming Strike, we get another +1/+2/+3 damage on the next one!
-Withering Fullblade gives your target a cumulative -1 AC (save ends) on a normal hit.
-Triumphant Attack debuffs your target's AC and attacks until the end of the encounter

A Power Attacking Overwhelming Strike, after 1 landed OS crit (which you get 19% of the time) becomes effectively: +36 vs AC, 2d12+47 damage, plus the sweet slide feature.

Overwhelming Strike Crit Damage: 24 (2d12 maximized) +6 (Critical Jolt) +2d12 (2 War Rings) +3d12 (High Crit) +6d6 (Withering Fullblade) +1d10 (Devastating Critical) +35 (includes Power of Storm, Painful Oath) [118 average damage] plus conditional: +3 (Echoes of Thunder) +9 (Power Attack)

And effects:
Target -2 attack, -2 AC until end of the encounter
Target cumulative -1 AC until end of the encounter (save ends)

In light of the (save ends), it's worth mentioning that your OoE target is -2 on saving throws... ...and in the event that you miss an attack, you get +5 to your next damage roll until the end of your next turn.

Relating to this build's play at all levels

This build is a little light on AC at Heroic, at least by my standards. 14 starting Dex, Improved Armor of Faith, and Armor of Faith combine for 16 AC at 1st. I typically prefer 17 or better, but that may just be me. On the flip side, this build picks up Weapon Focus *and* Power of Storm by 8th. As of 8th level, your Overwhelming Strike has statics of +10 assuming a +2 weapon. The Avenger/Storm Sentinel makes moderate strides on the damage front through Paragon by adding Painful Oath, HBO (for Overwhelming Strikes), Devastating Critical, Echoes of Thunder, and Power Attack. Use a Jagged Fullblade during this time for maximum satisfaction.

8. Human (Pursuit) Avenger/Blightspeaker/Demigod
-Fun with (save ends)
-Extreme survivability. 47 AC, and healed for 14 HP surge-free every time you crit with a divine attack.
-A fun bag of powers (but... you'll want an implement rod. Thus, Quick Draw for instant-swaps in the heat of battle)
-This build is sneaky. It winds up dealing more damage than you'd think on first glance.

The Malediction Business

This build gets it done a little differently. That's not to say it deviates from the usual Avenger hallmarks of accuracy-driven and steady damage. It still gets that done, but by different means. To help our At-Will damage, I've included Power of Storm and Echoes of Thunder again.

At-Will: Overwhelming Strike. +36 vs AC, 2d12+36 damage (with Power of Storm, Painful Oath)

-on the turn after sticking an Overwhelming Strike, Echoes of Thunder adds another +1 to your Overwhelming Strike damage roll. The Jagged Fullblade +6 serves a couple purposes, and contributes to the Crit Magic portion of this build...
-19% crit rate
-Target suffers -2 to attack and -2 AC until the end of the encounter
-Ongoing 20 damage (save ends)
-you get healed for 5+(wis mod) damage, surge free. This kicks in at 11th level, which is sweeeeet.
All of which is extra awesome because Fist of Heaven gives your target a -2 penalty to saving throws, and Echoed Malediction rewards successful saves against your effects with 10 necrotic damage. Now, you obviously want to keep the Jagged Weapon effect rolling, but even with Fist of Heaven, it won't be perpetual. Luckily, Echoed Malediction makes us care a lot less. If the bad guy 'gets lucky', they take 1 turn of the Jagged effect, then take 10 necrotic from successfully saving. For some added fun, we have Closing Pledge, which lets you make a huge shift towards someone you hit with a ranged attack. Soooo, if an enemy is too far away to engage on a move + charge, you can move + Radiant Vengance + huge shift (9 squares by 30th) to close the gap, which slingshots you a little farther and starts you off with temp HP. Good times!
Here's my current Avenger character. I'm playing him in LFR and I am enjoying it. Note: he just got to level 6 and I retrained Bond of Retribution for Bond of Censure. I haven't had a chance to play him since I made this change, but I got tired of not having a decent ranged attack...

My friend, you have a spare feat to play with. Power of Skill allows you to use Overwhelming Strike for all of your basic attacks (including OAs and charges), which makes Melee Training (Wisdom) completely unnecessary.

Let the good times roll!
I know. As soon as I hit level 7, I'm going to retrain it. I was going to at level 6, but I decided on retraining Bond of Retribution instead.
I know. As soon as I hit level 7, I'm going to retrain it. I was going to at level 6, but I decided on retraining Bond of Retribution instead.

Good stuff, man. Figured there was a good chance you already knew. Sounds like you're having a ball with that character. It's interesting to me seeing how differently some people approach the class than I do. I'm obviously a Pursuit enthusiast, and not really attracted to the Retribution builds. Having said that, I'm always curious to see those types of builds, and to hear the way people approach playing them.

Even very similar builds sometimes wind up being used wildly different ways from one player to the next. Case in point: Retribution players who intentionally charge up their Censure by drawing OAs, contrasted by Retribution players who champion very high defense and get their damage in other ways.
You'll maybe notice that I am playing a Minotaur, which gets a racial +2 vs. OAs when charging. It's a side benefit but I manage. Goring Shove is nice as an opening charge attack, especially if I can get my Oath onto a target before doing the charge, so I can roll twice for the attack.

I am also running a Fighter who has multiclassed Avenger using Hero of Faith. She's got a Vicious Spike Chain +2 and a Sunblade Fullblade +1 currently which she swaps between, depending on her target.

I noticed a level 9 Avenger daily called Glyph of Ruins or Runes or something. Anyway, it's a Close Burst 2 which targets all enemies in the burst. So, my Fighter will get to mark all of those, pull them 1 square so they are adjacent. They'll take 10 radiant at the start of their turn and, since they are all marked, will have to either attack me or be attacked if they try to move away, etc. Not a bad way to keep the party defended, really.
Not too shabby, Undrhill. I'll have to look at that Daily again in the context of defenders multiclassing Avenger.

One of the things I'm looking at right now is working out an Avenger who gets good At-Will damage and then uses Encounters and Dailies for bursts and blasts. Not sure if it'll work out or not as yet, but going over a bunch of PPs right now looking for something appropriate. May turn out to be a Retribution Avenger/Blood Mage or something along those lines. Still very much a work in progress.
Might I submit a possible concept?
Might I submit a possible concept?

Absolutely! All I ask is that you include points of interest, and post it as a 1-30 build so people can get an idea of how it is to play and see how it develops.
Nice thread Auspex!
Congratulations, i'm very happy of what i'm seeing here

There's a build out there that uses Invigorating Porsuit or any Divine Power Avenger-only feats?
Absolutely! All I ask is that you include points of interest, and post it as a 1-30 build so people can get an idea of how it is to play and see how it develops.

Ok, I'll give it a shot.

disclaimer
Minor caveat before anything else, this build isn't super optimized towards combat as some builds are. I've posted this before, but got no feedback. There are probably 2-3 feats by the end of it all that don't impact combat at all, but they go towards my overall character concept. Also, I mined both Forgotten Realms and Eberron for inspiration, so this won't be viable if some books aren't allowed. And yeah, I've never tried this out before, but this is something I messed around with in the Character builder.

Anyway, here's my stab at a Ninja-venger. Whole concept revolves around Sneak Attack, Wraithblades, and a whole lot of stealth.

Here's the character at his humble level 1 roots

At this point you got 2 more feats to choose. I choose RRoT at 2nd level since it helps out when I it's time to unleash that damaging daily power and you really want its effects maximized. Just don't miss. For the next choice, I train in using a double sword. It's got decent (not uber) damage at d8, and it works with twin strike. It also ups your AC by 1, so that's cool.

At this point, you start to get to feel of what you're supposed to do. Get a double sword Wraithblade ASAP. Get arm bands of power for more damage. Learn TWF so you add a little oomph to your attacks. Get stealthier. The choice of quick draw is more fluff then optimization, since battle harness exists. At this time, you should be getting crits every now and then, and generously applying Sneak Attack damage with each crit.

With your Avenger powers, you've got +13 to hit, and your 2 dailies now help you achieve more stealth (via Temple of Shadow) and massive damage (via Living Death Strike + RRoT). The utility at 6 lets you summon a Soul Seeker to help you flank your Oath target and get CA.

I'll stop here for the moment. Next time I'll post the character at level 15 and level 20, and it will make more sense then why Mark of Shadow was chosen.
That's an interesting build, GodLikeDevil. My initial reaction was terror, because the DM I'm playing with right now is a big fan of very challenging encounters with higher level (read as: hard to hit) bad guys. As a result, the idea of a character without very, very high accuracy makes me want to hyperventilate and hide under my desk.

Stepping back and taking a look, it doesn't seem so bad if you play with a DM who uses a lot of same-level (or close) enemies, or are able to get CA a lot--and it sounds like that may not be an issue.

I'm very curious to see what it looks like at 30, as well as 11 and 16 along the way.

This build is to "brutalize" as much as possible when your Oath misbehave.

When your oath moves alway from you, you receive a +6 bonus to damage rolls.

1st thing: use your move action to put yourself in charging position (shift one, move alway, use utility, whatever you want)

2nd thing: use your minor action to Declare that your Oath of Enimty is your Prey, so you get a +2 bonus to damage and attack rolls until the end of your next turn

3rd thing: Charge, if possible use Whirlwind charge. So from now on you have +2 to damage rolls and defenses until the end of your next turn from Invigorating Porsuit

4th thing: Action point, deliver an Overwhelming Strike with a total of +19 static bonus! And being a thunder power (from power of the storm), your next round you will receive a static bonus of +5 with all damage rolls made.

The choice of powers aren't exactly optimal, as you have seen, but in play this works out very nicely!

The only issue I see is that you won't actually get the Echoes of Thunder effect the turn after a charge. If you have Power of Skill, you're applying that Domain to Overwhelming Strike on the charge. Since you can't apply two Domains to the same attack in a turn, that would mean you didn't have the damage bonus or Thunder keyword on the OS when you charged.

I'm thinking there might be a way around that, though. I do like the idea of attaching a big charge to your Censure turn.
During the first turn it's not the charge attack that's gonna activate Echoes of Thunder, its the extra action-point attack, of which you deliver Overwhelming Strike with thunder damage, the second round your Enmity its not likely to run from you (not after such punishment), so the next round (if you deliver Overwhelming Strike again) the static bonus its gonna be 14 (the first count was on 19, minus 6 from censure, plus one echoes).

If you choose to add Death's Messenger, your adding an extra W to your overwhelming strike AND -2 to attacks

Paragon Tier selection of Feats is simple, just get whatever you suppose to get at heroic

Superior Weapon Prof.
Leather Prof.
Weapon Focus
Weapon Expertise
Improved Armor Of Faith
etc.

Very nice. I missed that completely. Well done, sir!

It makes sense that someone could reverse the feat progression, as well. Taking the cookie-cutter stuff early, then your sequence through Paragon, which would see the character pick up some fun as it evolved.

Good stuff, man. A nice deviation from the norm, and it's fully functional and FUN at heroic.

Thanks, i was aiming for something a little bit, odd.

The main problem about this build its the lack of powers that an Avenger can use in a charge, that's why i've chosen to multiclass into Bravo, since BASIC ATTACK is an at-will (the players handbook even have a power-card for it), so its my belief that i can use Death's Messenger in a charge.

Anyhow, this build is not focused to charge every turn, the purpose its to charge when your censure its triggered. If you manage to charge every action you won't receive any Echoes of Thunder damage bonus, but hey instead of that your getting your censure bonus, so its cool.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the accuracy. He doesn't really start coming into his own until Paragon, because that's when most of the tools of his "ninja-ness" come into play.

Now I will continue. What's the Mark of Shadow for, you might wonder? It's there so you can find out you're a bastard scion of House Thuranni and you can sign up to become a Thuranni Shadow Killer. Most ninja builds seem to have this, and there is very good reason why.

Now what this summary fails to mention are the cool tools you get from being a Shadow Killer. Spend an action point to become invisible when you really need it. Descending Shadows as your level 11 encounter power allows you to inflict nasty status effects on targets. Shadow Step allows you to create a zone of sustainable darkness every encounter. Also, the Baldric of Tactical Positioning lets you get CA as needed. Your new daily also provides incentive for your target to run away. And now that you are a versatile master, you've just gained another very good at-will power. And you can now hit more than one target! Jack of All Trades is there more for roleplaying than anything else.

Now we're talking. The level 16 feature of the PP really does wonders for your striking power. Shadow Wound lets you deal ongoing Necrotic damage if you attack with CA, which you'll most certainly have thanks to your tricks. Your utility of the Wraithblade is optimized with your Twin Strike. Your Avenger attacks mostly have a +23 bonus, which factoring in rerolls for oath targets, is respectable. Also, you could probably swap out one of the armor feats for two weapon opening if you want it earlier. My guess is that you'll do since extra attacks really help strikers.

Now here you are at the pinnacle. All your melee attacks are at +33 to hit, pretty decent, considering you've got 3 abilities pushing past 20. With the rerolls an Avenger gets if it's your oath target, you're gonna get your hits in. You've also now got the uber cool demigod utility of regeneration. I'd break this out for those boss encounters when you're fighting guys like Orcus or whatever. Regeneration 22 is nothing to scoff at. You've got your nuke daily, the Final Oath, which you'll probably couple with RRoT for maximum effect of 94 + 40 damage thanks to the Crit and Sneak Attack from Wraithblade. You'll never run out of encounter powers, you're also dealing 10 ongoing necrotic damage with each CA hit, and you're probably getting CA alot, and you're pulling off multi-attacks every so often. The end build relies on consistency of you hitting, and every now and then dealing spikes of damage, rather than on complex combos to be effective, but I imagine you can work out some nice ones. Since you have quick draw, there's no reason you can't have back-up light blades to mix things up with

You're a bad-***** ninja now in every sense of the word. You hit from the dark, you hit hard, and you're hard as nails to put down. With all those tools at your disposal, you also give incentive for your target to run away.

That's basically it.

Now here are the feats you'd probably consider swapping out if you want to make the character all combat optimized: Jack of All Trades, Ritual Caster, maybe Quick Draw, and RRoT if you think it's too broken. HBO is a good sub, along with Action Surge, Fist of Heaven, Blind Fighting, whatever.

But I think my original build as it is can blend story and play and fun in equal amounts. It's not uber-optimized, but it sticks to the concept: Former thief rises up to become a notorious infiltrating shadow killer until he becomes an avenging demigod? Pretty epic.
Build seems to take off when Twin Strike opens up at 11th, but you definitely made him playable up to that point, as well. At-Will damage should be good... Twin Strike, OoE, and sneak attack damage add up... Defensive double weapon + TWD...

Looks like it has a lot going on in general. You could even slip in Surprise Knockdown at some point for chuckles.
Have you thought about taking barbarian MC and taking a daily rage power with the elf pursuit avenger?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I think there's some advantage since it doesn't look like Avengers get a lot of persistent mods, so it would be a way to really turn someone into a blender for that fight where things are really going bad.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, the hardest choices as always seem to be feat selection and the order they get chosen. He's got a slow start because a lot of the foundation needs to be laid out in heroic and early paragon. You could say he takes a level of bad-ass every time he jumps from one tier to the next.

His rival though, a female half-elf rogue chain fighter, she's nasty as well.;)

My reply here was too long and rambling. Editing to summarize:

There could be some value, but the consideration here may well be the opportunity cost of going MC Barb. This cost is seen in the blocking of a lot of PPs and MC feats that you may otherwise want to take, and the fact that you're basically taking 2 feats (MC Barb, Adept Power) to swap out one OK Daily (Holy Ardor being the likely candidate) for a level 5 Barb Daily (probably Vengeful Storm Rage, which is good for Pursuit Avengers--or Oak Hammer Rage for Unity Avengers who want to give a flanking buddy CA).

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, though. I'd love to see some creative builds derived from this. You have any in mind?
I really like build number 4 because I'm very much into creating that whole lose-lose situation for pursuit avengers and I missed the fact that font of radiance can be used for that as well (I'll put it in my post on triggering censure of pursuit when I update it with DP stuff later this week and give you credit)

By the way, I think if you poke kilpatds he'd probably put a link to this thread in the build's section of his handbook...

(and a minor point: if you want to change your name in the title you can do by advanced editing your first post)

There's a build out there that uses Invigorating Porsuit or any Divine Power Avenger-only feats?

Mine uses invigorating pursuit and i have to say it's a devastating feat if you charge almost every turn as I do, giving a +4 to damage every round and making you even more impossible to hit. I liked your idea of using the bravo feat, I don't know if its completely RAW but if your DM allows it, who cares? I use a homebrew magic spear designed by me and my DM to make a greatspear possible for my feycharging avenger so that I can also use polearm gamble as an incentive to chase my opponent away (charge with overwhelming strike, shift one more due to boots of adept charging, giving my enemy the choice to approach me and give me an OA (with overwhelming strike) or move away and trigger censure! If anybody is interested, I have a full write up of my current level, level 18 and level 30 with DPR calculations of the latter that is in desperate need of some attention! :D
Thanks for the reply, IgFa. I hadn't known about the 'advanced edit' thing before, so you just taught me something new!

As far as nudging Kilpatds, I dunno... I'm not good at calculating DPR or any of that, and I get the impression that that sort of math tends to be expected of the posts in the Handbook thread. I almost expect that a lot of people won't look twice without the math already done for them. I'm not trying to insult anyone by saying that, just pointing out that we've all seen so many builds floating around that I think people frequently have their patience with build-reviews shortened, and prefer to see the bottom line.

Btw, re: Font of Radiance. That actually helps get Oath rolls, as well. Punishing Radiance 'spills over' to effect other targets around the person you just whomped with a crit, and Font does the same. Anyone who remains in the burst-1 zone takes that 3d6+10. Good incentive for everyone to scatter.

For added fun, you can Action Point after a crit to use Radiant Brilliance on your OoE target. Every bad guy within 5 squares of him just got vuln 10 Radiant, and he's now a time bomb standing at the center of a burst 1 landmine. Your DM should make a very funny face while he's trying to figure out what to do about that.

Hasbru's write up in his CharOp thread

Heroic tier play: Blink is your basic Pursuing Avenger, but progressively stacks swordmage feats that give her more charge options.

Paragon tier play: Blink PMC swordmage and turns one of her at-will into Frigid Blade, giving her an arcane at-will power, which will be her at-will of choice since she gets White Lotus Master Riposte as her level 11 feat. Paragon tier feats create automatic combat advantage as long as Blink hits with a cold power. Party coordiantion should ensure her target is isolated from the other PCs, thus giving it the choice between moving away and triggering the Censure damage, attacking her and triggering the Master Riposte, and dying idly.

Epic tier play: Blinks focuses on upping her damage potential. Her level 27 avenger encounter attack is traded for Dimensional Charge, to which the cold keyword is added. At level 30, the capstone feature of Arcane Sword turns Dimensional Charge into an at-will power. Oncoming Storm gives a +1 attack bonus each time it hits during a turn (it is labelled the same way as Echoes of Thunder), which boosts accuracy.

Typical encounter:
- round 1: minor action: activate Oath of Enmity (get Combat Advantage); minor: use Gond's Craft (get +2 bonus for your next attack with a magic item); standard: use Dimensional Charge to charge from up to 10 squares away. If the enemy attacks you, riposte with Dimensional Charge
- round 2+: move action: shift away if you are adjacent to your enemy; standard action: repeat Dimensional Charge

DPR calculation
- Attack bonus: +37 on a charge (15 level, 3 proficiency, 3 expertise, 7 Intelligence, 6 enhancement, 2 combat advantage, 1 charge), +36 on a riposte. You always have combat advantage thanks to Shared Enmity and Wintertouched/Lasting Frost
- Oncoming Storm: adds 4.80% [5% x (1-4% miss rate)] to your hit rate after Dimensional Charge until the end of your next turn, 9.34% [4.80% + 5% x (1- 9.12% miss rate)] if the target triggers White Lotus Master Riposte
- Echoes of Thunder: until the end of your next turn, add 2.88 damage per hit with Dimensional Charge [3 x (1-4% miss)], 5.60 damage after Dimensional Riposte [2.88 + 3 x (1-9.12% miss rate)]
- Lasting Frost: exploiting the cold vulnerability follows the same rationale: add 5 x (1-4% miss) = 4.7 damage
- Static damage with vanilla items (add Echoes of Thunder + cold damage): 44 on a hit (4d12 power + 7 Intelligence + 3 Weapon Focus + 2 Invigorating Pursuit + 6 enhancement), 106.5 on a crit (48 power + 3d12 high crit + 7 Intelligence + 3 Weapon Focus + 2 Invigorating Pursuit + 6 enhancement + 6d6 crit die)

At-will DPR with vanilla items (assuming the target attacks you):
- Dimensional Charge: 77% hit x 44 + 19% crit x 106.5 = 54.115 damage
- White Lotus Riposte: 7 Intelligence + 4.7 cold damage (cold vulnerability)
- White Lotus Master Riposte: 71.87% hit x 44 + 19% crit x 106.5 + 5.60 Echoes of Thunder damage + 4.7 cold damage = 58.83 damage
- Total DPR: 124.645 damage
- Additional DPR coming from the items selected (see build): 18.66

This is a long shot from the current DPR kings, but still achieve 100+ DPR no matter the equipment available to your character.

As usual, your comments, remarks and improvements are welcome!

Thanks for the reply, IgFa. I hadn't known about the 'advanced edit' thing before, so you just taught me something new!

Thank you for including my build

As far as nudging Kilpatds, I dunno... I'm not good at calculating DPR or any of that, and I get the impression that that sort of math tends to be expected of the posts in the Handbook thread. I almost expect that a lot of people won't look twice without the math already done for them. I'm not trying to insult anyone by saying that, just pointing out that we've all seen so many builds floating around that I think people frequently have their patience with build-reviews shortened, and prefer to see the bottom line.

Yeah that might be true, that's also why I posted my character on the striker boards, because I only optimize within the limits of my original idea (and using homebrew stuff makes you look like a bit of a cheater). If you want me to calculate DPR for any of your builds you can give me the specifics of the attack (to hit, normal damage, crit range and extra crit damage) I could calculate it for you (although I'm far from a math wiz so complicated stuff is best left to others).

I later realised that a gitzherai with the Rrathmal Paragon Path could do the font of radiance thingy every encounter due to trace chance, to bad it's save ends and epic...
I was happy to include it, IgFa-

The way I see it, the more builds people see that are functional and effective at all tiers, the more people will appreciate the Avenger class and what it brings to the table.

This type of exercise also starts to show a really wide variety of flavors within the broader Avenger umbrella. All of these builds retain the trademark Avenger traits of high accuracy, steady damage, high defenses, and great mobility--but they also often go about getting it done in entirely different ways. We've got Chargers, Critfishers, an Ongoing Damager, pure Avengers, multiclassers, etc.
The way I see it, the more builds people see that are functional and effective at all tiers, the more people will appreciate the Avenger class and what it brings to the table.

Yeah it's good to have around as inspiration as well as a demonstration of the available variety!

I have another charging build lying around that is a bit more optimized (I was trying to make a point about charging being an effective route for avengers) but also somewhat silly visually. It's a longtooth shifter (for gorebrute charge and higher strength) with a double sword (for surprising charge, two-weapon opening and the easiest mastery feat) on a celestial charger (for an extra +2d6) who stays bloodied all the time (for longtooth shifting and gorebrute charge), which is made viable due to pretty high defenses and the undying warrior ED. Result: An at-will basic attack charge with an average DPR of 110.2554 when having CA. (please ignore the sometimes inane order of feats, I didn't feel like rearranging things after having decided to go with the double sword).

Does anyone have an answer about using Death's messenger (Bravo Encoutner power) in a charge?
As far as nudging Kilpatds, I dunno... I'm not good at calculating DPR or any of that, and I get the impression that that sort of math tends to be expected of the posts in the Handbook thread.

The References section is for useful links... and math is not required. Added.

"Nice assumptions. Completely wrong assumptions, but by jove if being incorrect stopped people from making idiotic statements, we wouldn't have modern internet subculture." Kerrus
Practical gameplay runs by neither RAW or RAI, but rather "A Compromise Between The Gist Of The Rule As I Recall Getting The Impression Of It That One Time I Read It And What Jerry Says He Remembers, Whatever, We'll Look It Up Later If Any Of Us Still Give A Damn." Erachima

The References section is for useful links... and math is not required. Added.

Look: you made it in even without poking :P

Does anyone have an answer about using Death's messenger (Bravo Encoutner power) in a charge?

The reason I think it's not possible is that death's messenger does not modify an at-will, it let's you make an at-will attack like an MBA. Similarly, charge is an action that let's you make an MBA. So you actually you have two thing that let you make an MBA, but I don't think you could combine them into one action.

After 1st hit (factoring in CA as +2 to hit, assuming 1 flanker for Censure): +36 vs AC, 2d12+38 damage, flanker gets +8 damage on his next hit on the target.

Your flanker is also getting Combat Advantage and +1 extra to hit from Divine Distraction.

Crits apply the usual feat stack I slap on Radiant damage dealers:

-target and any enemy within 5 squares of target gain vuln 15 Radiant (Punishing Radiance, Symbol of Divine Light)
-all divine attacks benefit from the vuln (Pervasive Light)
-Font of Radiance (damage boosted from Punishing Radiance)
-Triumphant Attack

So... once this guy gets going, which takes exactly 1 swing to do, he is basically +54 damage per Leading Strike, with a bloated crit %, and fantastic crit riders. Have fun!
