Damage Inc. - An exercise in Brutality


I walk amongst the dead.  My dead.  The songs of my life are the crunching of bone and the rending of flesh.  And the screams... the screams are the choir of my sermon.  Let us pray.

Several things have changed with this build.  Namely the race choice, and Paragon Path.

Human and Adroit Explorer have achieved what is this builds core synthesis.  I seek to offer a viable alternative utilizing the Vistani Blood Line Feats while achieving the same results.

The Longtooth Shifter and Blood Fury Hunter Paragon path seek to further enhance damage as well as lend fluff to the bloodied build concept.

With that said, the defenses in the end for Damage Inc. are slightly lower than I would like, however the concept of this build is to provide a Stellar Damage Burst Specialist while still maintaining a level of Practical Optimization.

Build Summary

Damage Inc. is a striker pure and simple.  The goal of the build is to produce as much damage as quickly as possible and move on to the next poor bastard.  He is a single target destroyer that utilizes the features of the Ranger Class, the Action Point features of the Adroit Explorer Paragon Path, and the versatility of the Eternal Seeker Epic Destiny to acquire the action optimization of Bountiful Seconds (the Master of Moments ED feature), as well as Haste, and the Barbarian attack Hurricane of Blades.

Yay!  Thanks man.  Everything looks great, the only thing I could see is the Deadly Little Miho descriptors stating 5 soul shards when the damage we are using is based on having only 1 (to prevent situational), but that's really nothing obviously.

I'll Have Damage Inc's Paragon Nova up soon but I don't think he'll be messing with Miho's.  Again thank you!

If you look past the plot and the voice acting, Metroid: Other M was an okay game. Not a great game, but an adequate one. Not using the Metroid item collect jingle though? That, was a mistake.

I have to build up the strikes for Ultimate Confrontation and Rending Tempest.  When you hit with an attack power after Ultimate Confrontation the (W) damage increases by one.  Cruel Cage of Steel is 3 attacks so that builds it up.  Also it is +2 to hit so it helps balance out that i don't have CA yet.  It's better I lose the 15 damage from Headman's chop so that Nonchalant collapse as a minor action deals an additional 5(W).  The order of your attacks is very very important, otherwise you are losing damage potential.

Notice how the (W) damage scales and you'll see what I mean.

I can't take credit for the initial use of Cruel Cage of Steel with this Nova... that honors falls on Lord DuskBlade and his excellent build The Time Bomb which can be found here...

Don't be confused... you are quite correct!  I crunched the math and the result still came to 20(W)... congratulations you just helped me make my Nova even better, Thank you!  i will update the Nova when i update all the stages of the build.

Thank you for pointing out the Starting Score typo... it has been corrected.

As far as the rest of your post you have contributed absolutely nothing positive to my build nor did you specifically state anything wrong with the build.  The defenses are lowish until two-weapon defense kicks in at level 4 and chain mail at level 8.  Granted.  I have play tested this character all the way to level 11 twice now and the character performed optimally under even the worst of circumstances.  A good defense is a great offense.

My defenses by mid tier heroic are above average for a striker and I think I have dilligently made sure this char was above Glass Cannon standards.

If you have nothing positive to contribute nor viable construtive criticism I would appreciate it if you keep your opinions to yourself.

You also start out with a very low constitution, so this character can also not really take a few hits and keep going.

I am not a hater, at least not of anything posted on these boards, because that requires emotional involvement. I find that word much too strong.

However, I do think this build is not strong, and I do see it as a glass canon.
He does have a point regarding the fragility of this character early on. Fortunately, it's also very easy to fix that, at least to some extent.

Starting with a 20/13/13/10/10/8 array and pumping Wis throughout Heroic has the same end result as your array in the end, but it has the advantage of letting you get Chainmail at L1, which makes it plenty easier to survive.

Also, looking through your nova, I noticed that you count the Ring of Heroic Insight and the Belt of Titan Strength. These are both power bonuses to damage, so you may want to fix that.

I then rescind my previous closing statement.  The character starts a bit weak in heroic.  I'll give you that.  It would be a simple matter of switching a few feats/scores around perhaps to be more equipped from level 1 to 4.  However I found that having a good party also helped in my survival.

I have played this char and It hits a good stride before paragon.

Let me mention my edit here again.

The Ring of Heroic Insight provides a power bonus to damage rolls, and thus does not stack with the Belt of Titan Strength. You may want to fix that in your Nova calculations.

I would ask you to make these practical considerations as soon as possible, as I am interested in adding the build to my Handbook's reference list.

oooh I just realized I can squeak out 15 more damage with headsmans chop by using Non-Chalant collapse first which was pointed out earlier in the thread.  Sweet.  2,101 woo hoo!

No worries my man!  If it wasn't for your candid observations I wouldn't have been inspired to rework it and it would have indeed been everything I was trying to avoid (fragile).

It's still not the most bolstered striker build for sure, but at least it's not flimsy.

One of my greatest downfalls when making things like this is neglecting early heroic and saying "well he'll be better later."  That of course is not practical optimization.

I appreciate you and LDB's input, the build is only better because of it.

One last thing: I would suggest you toss the third At-Will (I don't really see you using it) for Heroic Effort (which I definitely see you using).

Found another thing: Invigorating Stride would suit this build well. While your Wisdom won't be all that hot in Heroic (you can waive the shift if it's not convenient anyway), the ability to second wind as a move instead of a standard will do wonders for your ability to do your job while you heal (just ask any Dwarf).
Vastly improved with the AC addressed earlier via armor feats. You have L2 listed as "Scale Specialization" right now, though that's obviously just 'Scale Prof' labeled incorrectly.

In a live game, I think you'd put Expertise ahead of the TWF tree, as well, and then simply slide those down a slot each.

baldhermit is a landmine. People who don't lurk in IRC probably don't know the name, and are likely to dismiss his comments, but... the guy won't speak with conviction unless he's sure he's right. People who write him (or other 'landmines') based on lack of name recognition may actually be shooting themselves in the foot.

MC-Drowbane, kudos for easing up, and seeing where bald was coming from. He's an awesome guy, and I'm sure you'll come to love the guy if you interact with him much in the future. You're right-- in the end, addressing the defenses early in the build's life gave it a lot more validity.

Anyway took your suggestions to heart Auspex and fixed the typo.  Invigorating Stride looks good LDB.  Seems a much better option than Begin the Hunt or even Endure Pain.  That power (BTH) seems so awesome on paper and then *pow* it just doesnt translate.

A Psionic Multiclass feat (I prefer Monk), however, is: otherwise, you can't pick up the L24 feature from the Master of Moments. As such, I suggest you change your MC from Barbarian to Monk.

Apart from that, it's all good. I'll be adding this build to the Handbook, and changing the sample build to resemble this more. Good work.

Ya I didn't MC for the Hurricane of Blades.  Eternal Seeker takes care of that, The barbarian MC feat is merely for the 2 damage per attack per Encounter with my nova. 

Im getting Bountiful seconds as well from Eternal Seeker.  Am I missing something?  That's why I don't pick the MC feat until level 30, it's basically just an Epic Nova capstone.

You need a Psionic MC to qualify for Master of Moments, so you need to take a Psionic MC feat at L30. Either way, Stone Fist Flurry of Blows will add a decent amount of free damage.
