Build Goal and Tactics

The goal of this build is to provide an impervious defense.

To that end, synergy between Hospitaler's Blessing and Weakening Challenge is the keystone of this build. Precious few monsters have any chance whatsoever of punching through the weakened condition (half damage) and automatic healing (that also happens on a miss) for 22 hitpoints. To so so would require that their maximum damage be higher than 44. A quick look at various monsters will show us that this is a rare quality for a potential foe to possess. After establishing that most foes cannot hurt a Hospitaler's allies, what is then left is status effects. To that end, we have chosen to increase the effectiveness of our Lay on Hands ability. Each use of LoH can target two allies, healing them each for 60 Hitpoints, and granting each of them a saving throw with a +9 untyped bonus (An autosuccess, unless they are suffering a penalty to saves). Due to these choices, we can not only prevent allies from being hurt by all but the rarest opponents, but we can also all but guarantee that we can also scrub out whatever effects an opponent might manage to put onto them.

Looking then, at our personal defense, this front is also very well protected. Our defenses are naturally at 48/43/44/47. Since we are wearing a Shadow Band, we have permanent concealment. Furthermore, we are using Psychic Lock with a Sorrowsong Blade, causing a -2 debuff to an opponent's attack if we manage to hit him. Should a marked opponent attack us, he will trigger Honored Foe, giving us our Wisdom Modifier's worth of temporary hitpoints. This triggers every single time an opponent does damage to us, be that ongoing damage, auras, zones, and anything else. Furthermore, we have a constant resist 5/all from our Ring of Free Time. To simplify, we might as well say that we have resist 12/all against marked opponents. Against standard opponents of same level, who at Lv. 30 deals a baseline of 3d8+10, your defenses (not including Psychic Lock or concealment from Shadow Band) combined with your damage reducing qualities, produce a state wherein no matter the defense attacked, you are will take less than 7 damage from an attack against any given defense.

Questions, thoughts, and comments are welcome!

Note: The summary will not work with CB as is, don't be surprised when it doesn't. Among other things, Ceaseless Guardian is not yet in the CB. This is meant as a placeholder, to help show when
things are retrained and such, until the snapshots and level by level sblocks are filled in.

Crazy Assumption: Cthulhu has the Madness and the Sea domains. He dares you to say that he doesn't.
Variants.
Analysis.
All done.  You may post.
Sounds interesting. I like to see the full build.

Semi-related:
I'm working on a Half-Elf Chaladin/Fighter/Hospitaler/ED? that (ab)uses Polearms and WLMR for more control while still shutting down the challenged target damagewise completely.
Looking good. Since it looks like everything else is essential, one thing to consider is Shield Mastery instead of Armor Specialization (Plate), giving up 1 AC for a +2 to Fortitude. Attacks against Fortitude tend to be more crippling than against AC.

I'd also make Epic Fortitude the first of that feat set to take, and save Epic Will for last since your CHA will take care of that until the very end.
Thank you for the suggestions! I suspect that I worry about Will overmuch; I usually place more importance upon it than need be. Duly noted and taken. I shall update the OP to reflect that, after posting this response.

Also, the Cthulhu reference is something of a joke. I'm of the opinion that it is RAW to worship multiple Gods. Multiple Divine Class descriptions (3 out of 5) talk about doing so, and Divine Power contains the following blurbs:

Divine Power Pg. 108

If your character worships multiple deities with
a common theme (such as the three gods of destiny,
Avandra, loun, and the Haven Queen). you gain
access to all their domains.

I don't think you can retrain Bardic Dilletante to Multiclass Mastery which requires that you are a bard.

You raise an interesting point which has been a source of some contention. Once people log onto the ##4e IRC again int eh morning, we'll hash it out and I'll either remove it or give an explanatory blurb.
I agree @ the bardic dilettante retrain.

Very glad to see this posted, and your formatting & write-up are very good, Imp. Very well put together.

The one thing I'd change is the title line of the thread. "Davy Jones: Half Elf Paladin..." etc, so that people interested in Paladin or Defender types are able to spot it.

Great stuff, though I love how this one came out.
What does the build have to do with Davy Jones?
What does the build have to do with Davy Jones?

Power of the Sea means he is the servant of a god with the sea domain.
At earlier levels, the build may take the Power of Madness domain feat as well, which means he's probably a little crazy.  Certainly Power of Madness is strong with the build, and will be in the variants.

Davy Jones promises eternal life to those who join his crew(his allies!), who then gain amazing abilities of regeneration(hospitaler, lay on hands).

He is a legendary captain and commander (guiding strike, paladin's leader secondary role, etc).

Davy Jones is great fluff for this Ultimate Defender build.
I don't think you can retrain Bardic Dilletante to Multiclass Mastery which requires that you are a bard.

cookies.gif To you, sir. I don't know what I was thinking. The Multiclass Mastery retrain will be removed.

The feat that would come closest to being removed for it would be Bolstering Touch - and I don't know if I'm ready to do that. Coincidentally, I believe that changing the race to Human ought to do nice things for you. Devoted Paladin, while not as much healing as Bolstering Touch could provide, does have the added boost of boosting your total Healing Surges, and Mark of Warding could easily take the place of Group Defense. At that point, you could pursue Power of Arcana if you so chose, and use Virtuous Strike in place of Guiding strike for usage with WLMR, or you could head in another direction entirely.
I would definitely encourage you to check out the new Paladin Basics article, if you can. There are definitely a few feats that would fit very nicely into this build.

Just some thoughts:

- Thematically appropriate and really effective: Power of the Sea + Hero's Poise.
- Lend Strength obsoletes Bolstering Touch (and has no race restriction, either).
- Angelic Protection makes your Lay on Hands deal THPs, of the exact same amount it would heal normally.
- In Epic Tier, Angelic Protection-ed LoH + Champion's Countenance = Allies' NADs are quite safe for probably two to three rounds.

Those should help.
I don't think you can retrain Bardic Dilletante to Multiclass Mastery which requires that you are a bard.

You can't retrain the Bard MC to Multiclass Mastery, no, but you can still do it in a 2-step process.  As I detailed at community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758...

You can devote an epic feat to Multiclass Mastery (AP; Level 21 Bard) at  21+ and pick the MCs you want to keep (detailed explanation below) then  retrain out the previous feats.  You won't lose the MM feat, cause it  satisfies it's own prerequisite of being a Bard.

So what you do  --
You take a Bardic MC feat that you DO NOT WANT to keep at any  level
At 21 (or later) you retrain the other feat you want (in this  case the lvl 18 Fighter MC feat) to Multiclass Mastery, with the two  options for it, you take the same Fighter MC feat, and the Bard MC feat  you want to keep.
Then at 22 (or later) you can retrain out the  low-level Bard MC feat to something more useful.

For the cost of a  couple retrains and an epic feat, you just gained an extra feat slot to  spend as you choose. You're a Bard at all levels, if you do things in  the right order, and the MM feat serves as its own prereq, so you're  solid.  You can also perform this sort of feat rearrangement with a  build that MCs to bard (or out of) and takes a power-swap feat, as they  all have the [Multiclass] tag.

Many MCing builds miss this trick, which is too bad, as it gains you a feat.

Edit -- this build seems to be a single-class MC and no power-swap, so it doesn't really gain you much other than a free power-swap feat, or another one of the Bard MC feats (there's 3, so it works)
Yes, Hospitalers are good.
I would definitely encourage you to check out the new Paladin Basics article, if you can. There are definitely a few feats that would fit very nicely into this build.

I've been eyeing it for about two days now, The temp HP from LoH is looking oh-so good as are a number of other options.
The one vulnerability I see with this build is against enemies with at-will bursts/blasts to include you and your allies, thereby not triggering any mark effects and ignoring your shadow band. Of course area attacks are the weakness of any defender. While group defense helps a little, you may want to consider swapping the shadow band for a foe binder ring, penalizing enemy attacks even when they include you. Also, why not Virtue's Touch over Lay on Hands? It doesn't cost any surges and removes conditions even if they aren't (save ends).
LoH for this build doubles the number of conditions it can remove but adding a 2nd target to the LoH. Not to mention extending the list of effects it can remove. It also gives the heals ontop and has the option for the TempHP instead. And as it's build with not taking damage in mind your should have the surges spair anyway.
Could we also get builds for Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Micky Dolenze?

Here they come!
The sea looks at the stabillity of the mountian and sighs. The mountian watches the freedom of the sea and cries.
Any thoughts on having Energizing Strike instead of Guiding Strike? Seems like the extra THPs would compliment well the healing you'll be dishing out.

That's a great bit of advice, there. As it is, I've made the following itemization changes. Timeless Locket +6 is being removed, and in it's place, I'm grabbing the following items: Amulet of Protection +6, Mummified Hand, Foe Binder Ring, Bradaman's weapon +3, and a Diplomat's Scabbard. If your DM interpret's Bradaman's Weapon in a way that is harmful to your performance, you could easily grab a Quicksilver Blade +4 (not enough money for a +5, unfortunately) for a bonus to initiative equal to the enhancement bonus of Quicksilver Blade.

Also, why not Virtue's Touch over Lay on Hands? It doesn't cost any surges and removes conditions even if they aren't (save ends).

I feel that the real weakness of Virtue's Touch is the relative lack of support as compared to Ardent Vow or Lay on Hands, the fact that it only works on a specific set of conditions, and the fact Lay on Hands can give out two saving throws to allies (Pious Champion + Touch of Salvation) with an automatic success by the end of your career (This is assuming a +9 Charisma Modifier. If you only have a +8 modifier it will only be a 95% chance of success.). It can also scrub out damage that your allies (or yourself) have sustained, while doing so. In many ways, I view Virtue's Touch as retroactively guaranteeing defense. If your ally was targeted by your enemies, you can heal them and grant them a saving throw, while spending your own surges, which ends up producing a similar outcome when compared to a scenario in which you were attacked instead.

@ Litigation: I've been busy with it and have prepared a tentative modification to the feat list. Here is a list of what I'm thinking of changing it to, and this is what it currently is. I'd really appreciate your thoughts (and those of any other interested party) on the proposed changes.

@Dielzen: cookies.gif Thank you so much for pointing that out to me. I'd misunderstood the MCing rules and was unsure if such a thing was allowed - Definitely glad that you stopped by the thread, and look forward to more insight from you.

@MortalSalazar: The Temp HP is certainly interesting. My initial reasons for going with a Guiding Strike dilettante was to acquire a method by which I could contribute more to the swift demise of opponents. While Davy is quite good at making saves, granting saves, and bonuses to the aforementioned saves, and while he is also very good at debuffing an opponent's attack rolls, he is unfortunately lacking in the DPR department. I'm unsure if it would be more beneficial to the party to have more sources of THP, or a -2 penalty to one of an opponent's defenses (or two, in the case of a successful WLMR).

An updated build should be inserted shortly, as well as all of the snapshot levels. When the edit occurs I'll be introducing a Changelog, and the first of the variants. Analysis of average damage dealt by same level opponents will be included as well.

It must be super obvious and I'm just blind, but how do you use Charisma instead of Constitution for amount of surges per day?
It must be super obvious and I'm just blind, but how do you use Charisma instead of Constitution for amount of surges per day?

Lv. 21 Ring of Tenacious will (Adventurer's Vault) is the source of that.

I'm feeling bad about the lack of updating this, but I've just been so swamped. I think that I'm going to force myself to actually do all the snapshots of the next build I post *before* I post it.

It's got a dual meaning. Davy Jones was also a 1960's singer that sparked off the poofy pirate shirt thing, hence the bard bit.
Added to the Ultimate Defenders thread.
Just out of curiosity (I havent followed the build all the way to level 30), what are the pros of keeping the build as a half elf over choosing human?

Also, when you pick up Bardic Dilettante, is the whole reason for this to grab Majestic Word or are their other benefits to the Bardic dip?

Please excuse my super noobish questions.

I will answer your questions backwards because they actually make more sense that way.

Bardic Dilettante is taken simply to fufill the prerequisites for the White Lotus feats which this build uses to set up a catch 22.

Half elf is the only way he can get an arcane at will with a divine class so that he can use the aforementioned White Lotus feats.
Yep, thanks for the reply Locks.  I read that late last night and hadnt had a chance to come and remove my silly questions.  Of course, as Imperil stated, pursuing Power of Arcana using Virtuous strike has a ton of synergies while freeing up some feats and the race choice as well, though its a little less flavorful.  Still, Power of the Sea and Power of Arcana (some sort of black magic is keeping Davy alive ;) continue the flavor of the theme.

Now that white lotus master riposte has been nerfed, is going for bardic diletante worth it anymore?

If not, what feats would you guys suggest to take the place of bardic multiclass and the white lotus feats?  I am working on a similar build and am looking to preserve some form of the catch-22 this build did so well.
Polearm Fighter Build Thread:The Reacher
I really like the idea of this build. Bummer that it hasn't been updated/have snapshots
Rather then posting a new thread, I slightly modified/updated the build. Changed it to a Tiefling, WLR still works because Power of Arcana adds the Arcana keyword to Virtuous Strike. Obviously if you're a Half-Elf just drop the Tiefling feats and pick up group defense etc.

Is WLMR worth taking now that the catch-22 is nerfed?  If it's not you could lose the 1/2 elf, take Kalashtar (+2wis/cha) and drop the 2 WL feats freeing up 3 feats for something else.
Is there an updated version of the half elf setup? There have been a ton of new pwoers and feats that potentially could be huge gains to this build. Im looking everything over, but im not the best CO so im sure theres soem i will miss. Possibly a level 30 snapshot would be great, or an updated main page.

I tried to update the half elf setup with the Char Creator today. i could rebuild and update it till level 11, but i cant find "Prescient Maneuver" so i took "Watch Out!".

Devout protector expertise.
You can't have a magic arms slot and a magic shield.

is it possible if we are finished updating the build to change the first post or should we make a new post/build linking to it?

You don't need versatile expertise. No you can't update the OP without getting Imperii to do it himself.

thank you. i put devout protector expertise to level 1. and will switch versatile expertise with "Hero's Poise" (or "Psychic Lock"). I prefer Hero's Poise cause you aren't that restricted to a weapon with psychic dmg and the synergie between Hero's Poise and Superior Will. is great If you have the opportunity Psychic Lock is still great. Updated the Items to level 30
