Deadly Little Miho - A Godslaying Build

I am the hunter in the night, and I am your death.  I fell men like Grandmother Time and flee quiet like the moon before dawn.  I am a shadow and I am unafraid.

Special Thanks:

LDB - For paving the way
My 2 Live Crew - Koval, Grey_Warden, obtusehobbit - for indulging my flights of fancy

Build Premise

Miho is a Hybrid Ranger Assassin, a dual wielding Bastard Sword build who revels in being bloodied.  Miho is the claimer of souls.  With her paragon Path Soul Thief, every time Miho takes someone to 0 hp's she gains a soul shard.  She can have 5 of these soul shards at a time.  When Miho uses an Action Point she gains 2+the number of stored soul shards to Attack and damage rolls until the end of her next turn.  With this incredible bonus she uses this with Power Attack, as well as various damaging elements to create a truly terrifying force.  For a God Slaying Nova build Miho is extremely playable at all tiers and has a superior attack bonus, ensuring her Novas will count.

Discussion:

Miho is good to go right out the gate, just point and shoot.  She will need a little 1st level caution as her Encounter power isn't optimal but she should serve you well by level 3 when she'll acquire Two-Blade Fighting Style and her first Minor Action attack via Ruffling Sting.

Discussion:

Time to Kill.

Important Info regarding these Novas:

The Soul Thief Action Paragon path feature allows you to use an Action point and add 2+the number of soul shards you have stored up.  It is important to note that you always have one soul shard stored up after each extended rest, so essentially with this build design you will always have at least one soul shard (after you kill your first monster when you turn 11th level).  This build will never use attacks that shed soul shards, so this is not a "situational Nova," the situational Nova is when you have more than 1 Soul Shard.

miscellaneous

Looks solid MC, just some random thoughts at first glance.

I feel like going all the way to Plate is useless. Boost your Dex at every level and stick with Hide. This saves you a whole 3 feats that you can use on improving that Nova.

I would retrain Danger Sense to Superior Initiative. It gives you a much bigger overall boost.

I'm trying to think if just going Frostcheese would be more advantageous than using those Battlecrazed weapons. You get CA so +2 more accuracy, but you lose out on 6d6 of damage for 5. I think Battlecrazed wins it, especially since it doesn't require a hit with the first attack.

Do the Gauntlets of Destruction add more damage than with, say, Gauntlets of Blood? Rerolling 1s is nice, but more damage to bloodied targets can come up quite a lot, and 5 damage on every hit is nothing to sneeze at.

All I got ATM, I'll take a look later as well. Nice work though.

Ok Grey (drum roll please) you were right.  I maxed out DEX, dropped the heavier armor and CON... this of course provided many advantages... better Reflex, initiative, Stealth, and Acrobatics, +1 to Speed, and freed up the feat slots to add some Assasin's Cloak, Killer's Insight, and Death's Pall.  This also solved my lack of a Shadow Band via monetary concerns with Death's Pall.  In addition I added the shrouds to the Nova which increased it by a whopping 20 points.  Yippee Kay Yay!

I already had Superior Initiative retrained from Improved initiative, guess you just overlooked it.  Kept Danger Sense, I want to go first for sure.  At any rate she is much better now, especially Fluff wise.

Thanks again!
Encounter Nova added and boy is she a beaut!
Before anything else, I want to say that my comments are intended to be constructive. Tone doesn't always translate very well on the internet, so I wanted to get that out of the way before continuing.

1. The AC is atrocious from L1 to L30. Use of the word 'atrocious' here is not meant to be insulting. I used that particular word because it is such a bad number for a melee build that it basically serves as a big, neon "STOP" sign.

I saw that you commented that the build was playable accross all tiers, and I don't think that that's quite true, as it currently lists. For perspective's sake, 22 AC at 11th means that a typical L11 Soldier hits you on a '5'.

2. Your Nova produces a ton of damage, no question. By L11, pulling it off means a dead L11 Elite.

Rather than offer specific feat, item, or power suggestions to improve the build, I'm offering a philosophical suggestion-- rework this so that Miho values preserving her own life as much as she hungers to kill bad guys. A good baseline for that AC is L+15 or better.
That is what I was going to suggest as well. You're novas are already extremely potent, but they're probably some extreme overkill. Instead of going for pure damage for everything you pick up, try to make your nova around 600-800 damage or so (very easily attainable with a Ranger) and then focus on more in-play benefits.

Novas, to me, aren't really the greatest thing in an actual play setting unless you have a solid character who's secondary function is a nova turn.

Maybe boosting Dex all the way and keeping Hide like I thought earlier, and then take some Lifeblood to negate that low Con and some other defensive feats.

400 damage is enough to kill any level 30 non-elite creature, and I don't believe any other creature besides Orcus or maybe a couple others have health over 800.
your both absolutely correct... I did the one thing I always warn about... I got sidetracked... the good news is I am diverting back to my old build *glares at Grey Warden*  Just kidding, you gave good advice I just went the wrong way with it... the rework will be up shortly and the Nova will remain untouched... New defenses will be considerably better.

Tho I do have to disagree with you about damage Grey_warden, Novas can never be overkill, especially if you can pull off a 600 one every encounter.

Thanks for feedback.

EDIT - I realize it won't be every encounter due to the nature of soul thief... but it will be alot of the time
Ok build revamped... much better defenses... unchanged Nova... I have a little refining to do (The skills are a little off) but essentially it's there.

Thanks again guys!
A couple of things I want to touch on--

1. Great to see the defenses improved. Not just the AC, either-- I loved seeing you address your NADs early in Paragon and Epic. I usually pick up Paragon Defenses at 14 or 16 with my builds since the break in math hits at 15th and 25th, but picking it up early actually means you're +1 for a few levels. Great stuff.

2. I love seeing big Initiative mods.

Re: Novas--

I tend to agree that Novas beyond 700 damage are overkill. That number will bury any Level 30 Elite Brute in the game, and other L30 Elites tend to cap out at about... 540-560 HP. Depending on source, deities and top end Solos range anywhere from 1100ish to 1,600ish... but Gods also discorporate around Bloodied these days. The moral of this story... dropping 700 damage in one round means the deity is out of your hair for a few years.

Godkilling is cute, but it isn't something most DMs are actually going to let you do in a round. While LDB made a bit of his name off the old Lord of the Pits build and its ridiculous Novas, talking shop with him for a few minutes will show you that the builds he actually favors in play tend to have lots of staying power, strong At-Will DPR, and Novas sufficient to drop an Elite-- because in live games, those are the things you really need.

With the adjustments here, I think you've moved more in that direction. As it now stands, the build looks a lot more practical. This is something you could break out at a table, and expect to do well from encounter to encounter, whether you got to show off the gimmick or not.
Awesome.  Thanks man.  Ya I love Big Initiative.  As far as the overkill Nova goes i suppose Godslaying is merely a term.  Maybe Dragonslayer would be more appropriate?  At any rate, there is more improvement to be done, and yes I am infatuated with big damage, obviously I can not lie.  I normally DM so these exercises are merely that; pushing the damage envelope which peeps like LDB and others have helped us do.

She is a slayer for sure, and I love her for it.  Master of Moments has helped to Unlock the "Godslaying Nova" but I wanted to put a little originality out there as well with the Soul Thief build which i have yet to see exploited, so I got a little excited.
I'd like to point out all your nova show/hide blocks are busted. You may want to take a look at that.

I'll also go ahead and say that I'm not a fan of Soul Thief for this build, at all. Killing 5 enemies for the Action Point feature to pay off means that at L11 the bonus is supremely conditional. The situation gets better at L16, but a front-loaded encounter day (aka Solo on the first fight) makes the nova cry. Piling on more conditionality on something that requires as many things to go right as a nova doesn't strike me as a particularly good idea. While we're on that subject, you'll also find that the (very unfortunate) current ruling on Begin the Hunt will make it tough to use effectively for the purposes of novas.

Also, the definition I use for "Godslayer" is the ability to churn up enough raw damage to drop any Solo, which at this moment means putting out the 1,645 to take out the Old Man with the Canaries. I believe this build is a bit short (about 100 damage off the pace, by what I see).

Another (very minor) detail is that the Sapphire Scabbards provide a power bonus to damage rolls, and thus do not stack with the Belt of Titan Strength. I also see no reason to take Fleet-Footed at Epic when Armor Specialization (Scale) will give you your base speed back, and add +1 to AC. Also, your L11 nova lists Gloves of Ice, but I saw no way to turn the attack powers into cold powers (which the Gloves of Ice require in order to add their damage bonus). If there is, the bonus is +2, not +1.

LDB

Thank you for your input and clarifications.  I would like to address a few points and clear a few things up concerning your input (which i am very grateful for I might add).

The Gauntlets in the level 11 build are not Gauntlets of Ice, but Frost gauntlets (heroic tier) - these allow you to use a free action after a melee attack and turn the attack into cold, slow the enemy until the end of the turn, and deal 1 extra cold damge on all succesful melee attacks until the end of the encounter.

Thank you for defining the criteria for a "Godslayer" build.  I of course have always used the term loosely and in deference to your builds which have obviously inspired me.  It appears by these standards that Miho indeed falls a bit short of this mark, however re-calculating the damage shows that I made a few initial errors.  My strength bonus was not correct nor was I using Called Shot damage for the Daily Nova.  The build is now about 75 points short.  If I could change the thread title I would to prevent confusion.  She should more aptly be titled Deadly Little Miho: A Slayer build.  My Jerry Bard build however seems to meet these qualifications, easily surpassing this mark.  He is still in a stage of optimization and any input would be sincerely appreciated as well.

Thank you for pointing out the contradictions between The Sapphire Scabbards and the Belt of Titan Strength, tho I am a bit confused as you appear to be using the two in tandem as well in your Daily Time Bomb nova?

Thank you for pointing out Armor Specialization (Scale), for some reason I thought I didn't qualify with my CON and overlooked it, a much better pick.  This improves my AC even more.

I wasn't quite sure what you meant by my nova blocks being busted, they appeared fine.  At any rate I fixed the spacings and enlarged fonts.

As far as Soul Thief goes, true the Nova is situational, tho I would like to point out I need only kill 4 creatures as each day I start with one Soul Shard.  My thoughts on this was that Miho would certainly be encountering minions in her day to day travails, especially if facing off against a creature of noteable power.  I do not think it is to far fetched to assume that she will be fully charged each day at least 50% of the time when facing off against a boss adversary.  I will be posting the 1 shard Novas (and tack on for each respective shard gained).  I tried to circumnavigate the "extended rest" thing, but even warforged appear to gain the benefits of an "extended rest."  Any suggestions or loopholes here would be awesome.

Begin the Hunt - I figured this was overtly powered and would see Errata, I obviously see why you are not using it.  Anyone know what the current wording on this is?  I can't seem to find it.  I will reconfigure the nova accordingly.

Again thank you for the time and suggestions.

Ok well I've been out of town for a bit but I was able to do some work on some chars and I managed to configure Miho's Nova's without the max Soul Shard charge up.  Take note that when the Soul Thief action is implemented the bonus to hit and damage is 2+the number of soul shards stored up (which is always 1).  As you can see by the math, the absence of 5 soul charges hardly breaks the build.

I will be posting the level 21 version soon, as well as the level by level breakdown.

Enjoy!
Questions -

1.  Character builder won't let me add the armor proficiencies.  Am I missing something?  They just aren't there as feat options.

2.  How are you adding so much dmg to twin strike?  My char builder says I don't get the str bonus but your attacks in your level 11 build show +14 then +20.  What am I missing?

3.  You have an attack called assess and strike listed under your level 11 nova but its not under your level 11 build.  Typo?

Thanks!!
Any way to get shade form in this build?  Why take shade form powers if we can't?
More questions!

Off-Hand Strike is a minor action?  What allows this?
Wow haven't seen her in a while!  To try to answer some of your questions:

1.  You need to make sure you have the proper pre-requisites; if you don't have enough STR or CON then the feats won't show up in the CB.

2. The answer to this is simple, I'm a moron!  Seriously.  Actually I just get to adding up damage bonuses and when dealing with so many the numbers start to take over my pathetic little mind and before you know it I'm pumping out exxagerated Nova monstrosity's and further damaging my fragile little rep.  Anyway I fixed it, good catch!

3.  Need to update the novas to reflect the character builds changes (she used to be a single classed Ranger MC assassin and I changed her, I guess i overlooked the lower level novas).

4.  You would prob have to hyrbid to get shade form and lose the two bastard swords, doable, but not recommended.  I have a shade form power?

5.  Hmmm I seem to have an old Nova up for the lower level ones.  I changed this build to a hybrid from an MC Assassin.  Will need to do some updating.  I'll try to get around to making her legit later today.

Thanks for your interest I hope this helps!

EDIT: Ok I fixed the glaring issues, will have to fine tooth it later.  I will more than likely adapt her into the new age and try to adjust her towards more of a "solar flare" approach (Nova without a set-up round).  This is just a reminder that I really need to do some serious old character maintenance.  At any rate I appreciate it!
Thanks for the update!

I am using your build for a character I'm starting tomorrow.  The flavor is changing, but the idea is the same.

The SoulThief powers allow you to regain Shade form - which would be an awesome addition to this build.

Well your option there then is to switch out Two Weapon Fighting in your Hybrid talent and simply use say a longsword and a Drow Long Knife in your offhand, this would also provide you with a feasible ranged alternative, which this build reliably lacks short of ENC powers.  Then take shade form as your hybrid Talent.

Like I said I'll fine tooth it for you here soon.  This was my first and favorite Nova build, needs a little work (obviously ;)) but still is viable.

Have fun and let me know how it goes!
Nah, I think I'll stick with the current setup.  Shadeform is cool, but not required.
here's a very important question for me and my dm. how did you hybrid assassin? is it listed somewhere?

Nothing but the rain.

here's a very important question for me and my dm. how did you hybrid assassin? is it listed somewhere?

Like the assassin itself, Hybrid Assassin is DDI content. It's been in the CB for a good while though.

what is cb? im sorry, but i am trying to build my first character ever, and i know next to nothing. ive been stuck in the world of 3.5 forever

Nothing but the rain.

CB = Character builder.  There are two versions of the character builder.  One is the first version that was offline and could be downloaded from the D&D website if you were a D&D Insider (Paid $10 a month).

Due to piracy (and $) WotC decided to revamp the CB and make it an online builder where characters are stored on their server in the clouds rather than your computer.

Most of us whole heartedly agree the new CB is terrible.  It's slow, it crashes, it's just plain bad.

However, there are other alternatives.  If anyone really wishes to know how to effectively use the old CB there are ways.  Dark, wonderous ways.  Consult with the gods of google or IRC.
I can't even get the new CB to load, and since I know how bad it is from everyone else's horror stories I didn't bother investing the time into fixing that problem (which I know can be fixed by going through a bunch of annoying hoops, but why bother when all you get is...the online CB that times out all the time and other crap?)
New signature under development.
There are other ways my friend... look for the old CB on line.
Any suggestions for this build for LFR??  (i.e. Can't have 2 Battlecrazed weapons)  Unless I missed something I think that is the only item that that isnt LFR legal.

Thanks!
Suggestions for background/theme on this?  Love the build!
