So with there not being a single solid hammer barbarian build out there anymore, I decided to make my own. So, here it is:

Mordenkrad (30)
5 Javelins (25)
Hide Armor (30)
Standard Adventurer's Kit (15)

Discussion

The intial ability distribution is extremely important for this build, more than most other builds. The 13 in Wisdom allows the hammer wielder to qualify for Battle Awareness without needing to increase it further. Strength gets the majority of points because you can't make a good barbarian without any strength. Constitution is the second highest ability for HP and riders, and Dex is the third highest for AC and Reflex.

The hammers are in the build over Heavy Blades for 2 reasons: 1) because no one thinks that hammer builds are any good now after the HaE nerf, and 2) they deal a lot of damage Laughing

For powers, Howling Strike and Pressing Stirke really don't need any explanation, and Desperate Fury is there for the rerolling goodies. Thunder Hooves Rage was put in because I feel the extra damage is more important than Swift Panther Rage's extra mobility, and being able to move through enemy spaces lets you get to the back line quickly.

Level 2

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
New Feat: Weapon Expertise (Hammers)
New Utility: Shrug it Off

New Magic Items:
L2: +1 Badge of the Berserker
L3: +1 Vanguard Mordenkrad
L3: +1 Beastial Hide

This level is actually pretty big. You get a total of +2 to hit, +1 to defenses, and +1 to checks, making you a much better character. Also, you get the fantastic utility Shrug it Off, which lets you ignore those pesky status effects and keep on dealing some damage. You also get a few really nice magic items, including the Badge of the Berserker, which you will keep throughout your career.

Level 3

Changes:
+6 HP
New Encounter Power: Brutal Slam

Discussion:
Not quite as exciting as level 2, but you do get the great Brutal Slam, which lets you both gain charging space and lets you deal more damage when you charge. We'll take that.

Level 4

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
Ability Score Boosts: +1 Strength (19), +1 Dexterity (15)
New Feat: Weapon Focus (Hammers)

Discussion:
This level sees both your to-hit and damage go up, which makes you a little more competent. You also get to boost your Strength and Dexterity, which is nice.

Level 5

Changes:
+6 HP
New Daily Power: Rage of the Crimson Hurricane

New Magic Items:
L6:
Iron Armbands of Power (Heroic)

Discussion:
This is a very solid level. RotCH lets you use another rage and also increases your damage by a hefty margin. Iron Armbands of Power=sexy Wink

Level 6

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
New Feat: Reckless Charge
New Utility: Snarling Defiance

New Magic Items:
L6: Horned Helm

Discussion:
Another big level. Horned Helm increases your damage by a decent amount while charging, and Reckless Charge adds some accuracy. Your charges should now be at a +12 to hit, which is extremely high for this level.

Level 7

Changes:
+6 HP
New Encounter Attack: Curtain of Steel

New Magic Items:
L8: +2 Vanguard Mordenkrad

Discussion:
A very solid level, you get the awesome Curtain of Steel, which increases your DPR by a huge amount. Also, you upgrade your weapon. Nice.

Level 8

Changes:
+6 to HP
+1 to attack/defenses/checks
New Feat: Battle Awareness
Ability Score Boosts: +1 Strength (20), +1 Dexterity (16)

New Magic Items:
L7: +2 Badge of the Berserker
L7: +2 Maruader's Armor

Discussion:
This level sees some major changes, as well as your multiclass. You get Battles Awareness, which lets you make a free attack 1/encounter, and you get the very solid Marauder's Armor, which you will keep the rest of your career. You also upgrade your BotB and your Str/Dex.

Level 9

Changes:
+6 HP
New Daily Power: Oak Hammer Rage

Discussion:
Oak Hammer Rage is sooooooooooooooooooo good. Knocking prone at-will is about as good as it gets, especially in late-Heroic, and it gives you room to charge. Yay!

Level 10

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 attacks/defenses/checks
New Feat: Wintertouched
New Utility: Enraged Surge

New Magic Items:
L10: Boots of the Mighty Charge

Discussion:
A very big level once again: Wintertouched will be fanatastic in one level, Enraged Surge gives you increased accuracy and damage for a rare miss, and Boots of the Mighty Charge will let you make your charges into truly brutal hits, as well as giving more mobility for the charge.

Level 11 Snapshot

Race: Goliath
Class: Barbarian
Feral Might: Rageblood Vigor
Paragon Path: Kensei

Ability Scores:
Strength 21 (+5)
Constitution 17 (+3)

Intelligence 9 (-1)
Wisdom 14 (+2)
Charisma 11 (+0)

HP: 92
Bloodied: 46
Healing Surges: 11
Surge Value: 23

AC: 25
Fort: 24
Reflex: 22
Will: 20

Initiative: +8

Speed: 6

Racial Powers:
Stone's Endurance

At-Will Powers:
L1: Howling Strike
L1: Pressing Strike

Encounter Powers:
L1: Desperate Fury
L3:
Brutal Slam
L7:
Curtain of Steel
L11: Masterstroke

Daily Powers:
L1: Thunder Hooves Rage
L5: Rage of the Crimson Hurricane
L9: Oak Hammer Rage

Utility Powers:
L2: Shrug it Off
L6: Snarling Defiance
L10: Enraged Surge

Skills:
Athletics +16
Endurance +12
Intimidate +10
Nature +14

Feats:
L1: Weapon Proficiency (Mordenkrad)
L2: Weapon Expertise (Hammers)
L4: Weapon Focus (Hammers)
L6: Reckless Charge
L8: Battle Awareness
L10: Wintertouched
L11: Lasting Frost

Magic Items:
L8: +2 Frost Mordenkrad
L7: +2 Marauder Hide
L6: Horned Helm (Heroic)
L6: Iron Armbands of Power (Heroic)
L11: Gloves of Ice (Paragon)
L10: Boots of the Mighty Charge
L7: +2 Badge of the Berserker

Discussion:

A very big level, as always. You now have the fantastic Kensei paragon path, giving you a permanent +1 to hit and letting you reroll an attack for an action point. You get your +2 Frost Mordenkrad and Frostcheese, letting you deal absurd amounts of damage at this point, and you get the Gloves of Ice to punch through resistances.

You now have some pretty impressive powers, backed up by actually solid defenses. You can hit hard and live to talk about it.

Level 12

Changes:
+6 to HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
New Feat: Hammer Rhythym
New Utility: Ultimate Parry
Ability Score Boosts: +1 Strength (22), +1 Constitution (18)

New Magic Items:
L13: +3 Frost Mordenkrad

Discussion:
You get a mediocre bonus to defense in Ultimate Parry (but you don't get to pick, so i guess we'll take it). You get a big boost an offense, however, by upgrading your weapon and picking up Hammer Rhythym.

Level 13

Changes:
+6 HP
New Encounter Power: Storm of Blades (replacing Desperate Fury)

New Magic Items:
L12: +3 Badge of the Berserker
L12: +3 Marauder's Earthhide

Discussion:
Picking up Storm of Blades is always a great level, as it has some absolutely enormous damage. You also upgrade your neck and armor items.

Level 14

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
New Feat: Armor Specialization (Hide)
Ability Score Boosts: +1 Strength (22), +1 Constitution (18)

New Magic Items:
L2: Siberys Dragonshard of Merciless Cold
L14: Ring of Fury

Discussion:
Decent level. A decent but noticeable boost in defense with Armor Spec., which will be retrained to Second Skin at Epic. You could have picked up the shard earlier, but I just put it in here at this level. Ring of Fury was put in to provide a pretty solid boost in damage, without breaking the budget.

Level 15

Changes:
+6 HP
New Daily Power: Thunderfury Rage (replacing Thunder Hooves Rage)

New Magic Items:
L11: Siberys Dragonshard of Merciless Cold (paragon)

Discussion:
You get a great way to punish enemies with Thunderfury Rage, and you upgrade your dragonshard for some more damage.

Level 16

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
New Feat: Avalanche Reaver
New Utility: Spur the Cycle

New Magic Items:
L16:
Iron Armbands of Power (paragon)

Discussion:
Another item upgrade, this time Iron Armbands up to paragon tier. Spur the Cycle can give you crazy amounts of damage in your turn, and Avalanche Reaver is there to gain distance to charge as well as combine with Draconic Arrogance later on.

Level 17

Changes:
+6 HP

New Magic Items:
L18: +4 Frost Mordenkrad

Discussion:
One of the most boring levels you'll have, you don't want to lose the charging capabilities of Brutal Slam or the out-of-turn damage of Curtain of Steel, so we'll just upgrade our weapon and call it a day.

Level 18

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
New Feat: Charging Rampage
Ability Score Boosts: Strength +1 (23), Constitution +1 (19)

New Magic Items:
L17: +4 Marauder's Darkhide
L16:
Horned Helm (paragon)

Discussion:
General upgrades here, you upgrade both your armor and your horned helm, and you increase your constitution and strength, so now you can qualify for Bludgeon Mastery at Epic. Charging Rampage can increase your DPR on a crit by quite a lot, so it makes it's way into the build.

Level 19

Changes:
+6 HP
New Daily Power: Winter Phoenix Rage (replacing Rage of the Crimson Hurricane)

New Magic Items:
L16: +4 Badge of the Berserker

Discussion:
You get one of my favorite rages in your arsenal at this level, Winter Phoenix Rage. Combine it with Stone's Endurance and you'll be nearly invincible for 1 round, which is nice. You also upgrade your neck item.

Level 20

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
Paragon Daily Power: Weaponsoul Dance
New Feat: Deadly Rage

Discussion:
No item upgrades, but still a solid level. Deadly Rage just adds some more damage to your already pretty insane damage output, and Weaponsoul Dance provides a decent daily to use when you don't want to switch rages.

L11: Lasting Frost
L12: Hammer Rhythym
L16:
Avalanche Reaver
L18:
Charging Rampage
L20:
Deadly Rage
L21:
Draconic Arrogance
L21: Second Skin

Magic Items:
L21: Gloves of Ice (Epic)
L18: +4 Frost Mordenkrad
L17: +4 Badge of the Berserker
L17: +4 Marauder's Darkhide Armor
L16: Horned Helm (Paragon)
L16: Iron Armbands of Power (Paragon)
L14: Ring of Fury
L12: Siberys Shard of Merciless Cold (Paragon)
L10: Boots of the Mighty Charge

Discussion:
An extremely important level for you, you get the amazing Reincarnate Champion ED. This lets you increase your damage by quite a lot by adding your Strength bonus in when you charge (via the Draconic Arrogance + Avalanche Reaver combo).

You also get a solid defensive boost in Second Skin, which also gives you a +1 to-hit with Primal Powers, which is basically all your attacks. We'll take that.

Again, another item upgrade, this time upgrading your Gloves of Ice to deal +4 damage or punch through 10 resistance. This gives you a pretty solid boost in damage, as resistance to cold really cuts down your DPR.

Level 22

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
New Feat: Bludgeon Mastery
New Utility: Untouched

New Magic Items:
L23: +5 Frost Mordenkrad

Discussion:
Solid level up here, you grab your weapon mastery to make your chance of a crit double (and thus doubling your chance at getting Charging Rampage, which in turn nets you a big boost in overall damage), you get the very good Untouched utility, which lets you get rid of every status condition effecting you, and you upgrade your weapon.

Level 23

Changes:
+6 HP
New Encounter Power: Crater Fall (replacing Brutal Slam)

New Magic Items:
L22: +5 Badge of the Berserker
L22: +5 Marauder's Stalkerhide Armor

Discussion:
Another equipment upgrade, this time both your armor and neck item get upgraded, increasing your defenses by a good margin. You also get Crater Fall in place of Brutal Slam, letting you mass-knockdown on your charge.

Level 24

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 attacks/defenses/checks
New Feat: Overpowering Charge
New Encounter Power: Iron Breaker's Shout (replacing Crater Fall)
Ability Score Boosts: +3 Strength (27), +1 Constitution (21)

Discussion:
A lot of minor changes happen at this level. Since you grab Overpowering Charge, you retrain Crater Fall to Iron Breaker's Shout, giving you a nice way to set up for a nova round. You also get a total of +3 to Strength, which is always nice.

Level 25

Changes:
+6 HP
New Daily Power: Stone Tempest Rage (replacing Oak Hammer Rage)

New Magic Items:
L25: Belt of Titan Strength
L21: Siberys Dragonshard of Merciless Cold (epic)

Discussion:
Man I love Stone Tempest Rage. Having a big crit range of 18-20, combined with Charging Rampage, lets you take advantage of it quite a lot, which is nice. You also get the nice Belt of Titan Strength, increasing your damage once again, and you upgrade your shard.

Level 26

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
New Feat: Epic Resurgence
New Utility: Swift Reincarnation

New Magic Items:
L26:
Iron Armbands of Power (Epic)

Discussion:
Epic Resurgence lets you regain an encounter power after a critical, and Swift Reincarnation is a solid emergencey escape power. You upgrade your Iron Armbands, adding even more damage.

Level 27

Changes:
+6 HP
New Encounter Power: Hurricane of Blades (replaces Curtain of Steel)

New Magic Items:
L28: +6 Frost Mordenkrad

Discussion:
The last encounter power level is a beauty. You get the amazing Hurricane of Blades, which is arguably the best encounter power of any class, and you upgrade your weapon one last time.

Level 28

Changes:
+6 HP
+1 to attacks/defenses/checks
Ability Score Boosts: +1 Strength (28), +1 Constitution (22)
New Feat: Primal Resurgence

New Magic Items:
L27: +6 Marauder's Elderhide
L26: Horned Helm (Epic)

Discussion:
Primal Resurgence and Epic Resurgence combine to give you back at leats one encounter and one daily power back per day, which is nice and can increase your damage output. You upgrade your armor for the final time and get the best Horned Helm.

Level 29

Changes:
+6 HP
New Daily: World Serpent Rage (replacing Thunderfury Rage)

New Magic Items:
L27: +6 Badge of the Berserker

Discussion:
By now, you'll be doing a rediculous amount of damage per charge, and when you use World Serpent Rage with it, you'll be dealing insane amounts of damage. You also upgrade your neck item. By now, if you've gotten to level 29, I bet you like this build, so 1 more level can't hurt Laughing.

Discussion:
Congratulations, you reached level 30. All your feats are picked, your powers are set, your items are fully upgraded. Enjoy wielding a gigantic hammer, you've earned it Laughing

You'll have a lot of gold left over, but these are just the essentials.
Will finish up in the morning, kinda late right now. Feel free to comment though while I sleep
Woo-hoo, a Hammer Barbarian! Added to the Handbook's reference list.

The only thing I would really like to see is a more detailed wealth breakdown (gp total), but I'm not gonna lose too much sleep over that.

Thanks for the addition to the reference Laughing

The only thing I don't like about the build really is that you don't really need to use hammers. If you've got any tips for hammer-only feats or the like, feel free to mention them.

Also, if you think using a hammer-only enchantment would work better, I was trying to fit that into the build but I couldn't find a better enchant to use than Frost and frostcheese

Finally finished it up.

Any thoughts/comments/observations are very much appreciated

@LDB: I added a wealth breakdown at level 30 just for you Wink
Haha, looks a lot like the build I just posted.  Similar DPR output - see mine @ Cold Sweat .  A guy for mine suggested Armor Proficiencies but I'm unconvinced as of yet.  I'll look more at yours and see if there's anything otherwise.

Yeah it is pretty similar.

I looked at your build, looks pretty solid. I just left a few opinion-based suggestions, but nothing you really need to worry about. Thanks for the input

Some personal item suggestions: Grab a Ring of Fury, they are pretty sweet, granting 2 basic melees after being bloodied and/or a Stone of Earth which lets you re-roll one attack roll once a day (which is nice when you miss with your daily or that Hurricane of Blades).

What book is it in? I can't seem to find it anywhere (Ring of Fury I mean)

No one else sees anything about this build that I could change or have any suggestions?

Ring of Fury is in Dragon Magazine 366

Level: 14
Price: 21,000 gp
Item Slot: Ring

Property: Gain a +2 item bonus to Intimidate checks.

Power (Daily): Free Action. When you are first bloodied, make two basic attacks.

Special: If worn with the belt of fiends, you gain a +2 item bonus to Diplomacy, Insight, Bluff, and Religion checks when dealing with devils.

Not sure why you went Goliath. Considering your splitting evenly between Dex and Con, any Str/Dex or Str/Con race would work, and if you're not taking Greatweapon Prowess, why bother with a Goliath when you could pick up something like Furious Assault from being a Half-Orc?
I need to be a Goliath for Avalanche Reaver.

But I could see being a Half-Orc, ending with the same stats, and taking Goliath as my second past-life race, but I lose out on a lot of damage until level 24, which is kinda annoying. I'll look into it more.

@Kramerica: thanks, I'll put it in
Second Skin only gives +1 to Primal Fear powers, not all Primal powers.

How many of your attacks have non-[W] dice? I was looking at it, and Gauntlets of Destruction+Maul+GGWP is pretty close to the Mord, since the Gauntlets gives Brutal 1 to all dice and not just [W] dice. You lose 3 static damage in exchange for all your dice in every attack getting brutal 1, and gain a feat slot. And a little cash. Level 18 vs level 21 item.

Also not a big fan of Hammer Rhythm. Just in general, it used to be very good, but 6 damage on a miss is kind of eh when your hits can probably clear 100. Could easily get Powerful Charge or Enduring Rage, etc.,
I don't really need the gauntlets though because most, if not all of my attacks are weapon attacks, so the brutal 1 would only apply to my weapon, and Mordenkrad already has that property, so I can use Iron Armbands instead. GGWP also only gives me 1 more damage than Weapon Focus, so I don't think it's worth it.

Yeah, I forgot about that for Second Skin. Good catch. Even so, it's still a solid feat.

Thanks for the input

? You'd still be using Iron Armbands. You'd give up Gloves of Ice. And yes, it is 1 more damage, which is why I said you'd lose 3. And Gauntlets would apply to all the dice in Howling Strike. So at least for that power, Gauntlets+Maul ends up being better. Which is why I said it'd depend, but I'm sure there is a feat that makes up for 3 static damage.
My bad, that's what I meant.

Gloves of Ice are really important for punching through that cold resist. I see what you're talking about, but in my opinion, punching through that resist is more important.

I guess it's just more opinion-based than anything else.

This doesn't matter when you're working with Frost Cheese, which gives anyone a vulnerability 5 to Cold thanks to Lasting Frost.
It does, because a enemy with cold resistance 10 will result in a significant net damage disadvantage for you without the Gloves, whereas with the Gloves it's just a speedbump. Their versatility in allowing you either batter through resistance or provide extra damage are one of the major reasons why I like the Permafrost combo on a Barbarian.

Exactly.

Especially in later tiers, too many enemies have cold resistance for me to use anything BUT Gloves of Ice. You could use something else, but I would only change it if I wasn't using Permafrost for this build. There just isn't anything better than the Gloves of Ice.
I came across this and first off nice build, I am still a bit new to 4th edition so I had one question regarding the feat "wintertouched".  It states "When attacking a creature that is vulnerable to cold, you gain combat advantage when you use a power that has the cold keyword", how does this help a barbarian?  There dont seem to be any powers that I can tell with this ability save for a few so it doesnt seem very viable.  I like the rest of the build especially with the gloves of ice and lasting frost I just dont understand the reason for that one feat.

Question : Why people who create barb characters prefer nature and not perception?

Personal preferance maybe. If you would like perception take that instead.
