Discussion:
The White Raven Crusader's key abilities are Strength, which he uses to make all his attacks, and Charisma, which determines the rider effects on some of his powers, as well as his Divine Challenge. Those need to be raised as high as they'll go. After that, he starts with a 13 in Wisdom, which is necessary to qualify for one of his key feats in Epic Tier. His Constitution isn't the best, only an 11, but he had priorities.

He makes up for that Constitution by taking Durable at the very start. And he also takes Paladin Armor Proficiency to be able to wear plate armor and carry a heavy shield from the getgo. This will be very important to survive the abuse he's going to take through his career.

Ardent Strike is his lone power from the Paladin class, which he uses when he needs to Divine Sanction somebody. All his other powers are the standard Warlord enabling and buffing fare at this level, which is all made of awesome.

Discussion:
At this level, you establish the immediate need to hit often. You take Versatile Expertise to that end, and you also wield an Inescapable Longsword to make up for the moments when you do miss. You also don't like getting hit, so you upgrade to Meliorating Plate, which improves over the course of the day. Your neck item gives a boost to NADs and some important saving throws. Finally, you take the Paladin utility Virtue, which is proactive healing with the expectation that you're going to go through at least one healing surge every encounter. That also saves your one Inspiring Word for an ally if they should need it.

Discussion:
Pretty significant level. You get the General's Belt, a solid item in its own right with its Fortitude bonus and daily surge trigger, but also a part of the Regalia of the Golden General item set. Since you already have the Golden Crown of Battle Command, the belt just also gave you an extra +2 to Will. You also pick up the Gloves of the Healer to make your Inspiring Words more efficient. And last, but certainly not least, you arrive upon the excellent nova power War Master's Assault.

Discussion:
The Paladin feat Hero's Poise is huge with your Charisma as high as it is. Now whenever you succeed on a save, your allies get your Charisma bonus on their saves until your next turn. And you just so conveniently happen to have a save-reroll utility power from your PP to aid in triggering Hero's Poise when you and the party need it most.

Another big development is that since you're trained in Insight, you retrain Action Surge for the Skill Power feat to take Insightful Riposte. It gives you a +3 bonus to hit per encounter, same as Action Surge, and you can save it for a moment that you miss with an attack. Since you don't exercise too many crucial blast and burst powers, it's a better, more versatile, more often-triggered personal attack boost in your case.

In addition, you also pick up the excellent defensive stance Divine Aegis. You can't afford the main upgrades, yet, but you can slip in some Winged Boots.

Build Goal and Tactics



This build is meant to recapture the feel of the Tome of Battle Crusader who focused on the White Raven school, with a few Devoted Spirit maneuvers on the side. A sturdy battle leader who also made enemies pay when they decided to harm his allies. And who shrugged off adverse conditions regularly. This build even takes that one further by helping his allies shrug off those conditions after he set the lead in doing so, with the constant benefits of Hero's Poise, backed up by Martial Resolve, Focused Mind and Destined for Greatness.

Focusing on the White Raven school first and foremost, the White Raven Crusader puts his most intensive training toward leadership on the battlefield, outfitting himself with multiple ways of enabling extra attacks from his allies. His nova potential encounter after encounter, as well as his ability to heal, makes him a wanted man, the target that enemies always want to kill first. He works his methods in the thick of every fight, obviously making himself a tempting target. But his defenses are also good enough to handle what comes, and he is not easy to bring down. Should enemies get frustrated trying to attack him, he pays just enough attention to his divine marking abilities to make that a not-so-nice plan. His mark punishments themselves aren't the best, but when he's enabling attacks for quick kills and generally being a serious pain, it shall suffice.

I. The True White Raven


Some of you may ask, "What's a White Raven Crusader without the White Raven paragon path?" Well, the original build is meant to fit into a wide range of parties as a Leader/Defender, while still maintaining the flavor of the old Tome of Battle Crusader. The actual White Raven PP has features that are powerful numbers-wise, but are very limited in range. As a result, it is only a good fit for parties whose members keep close to each other in combat (typically melee-heavy, or even melee-exclusive parties).

But since I would be remiss to not at least pay that PP any attention at all when the name of the build has White Raven in its name, here is the variant that actually takes the White Raven PP. Play this one only if everyone else in your party is melee.

Looks tough to kill and is a good leader. Nasty combination.
Love it. I would choose Viper Strike over Intuitive Strike for more crowd control, though.
Viper's Strike's deal only work agains the enemy you hit. That's not really crowd control. You also pretty much need a Fighter in the party to really make it sing. Intuitive Strike is more useful in a wider range of parties.
I love it. A hybrid across two roles that has a very clear concept and fits both roles well - that's a rare thing!

It makes sense to me that an order of paladins, clad in steel and fighting for their faith, would have a leader who was still a paladin. This is that guy - he's a real combat commander, a leader amongst his people. He stands above them but also amongst them.

The Adroit Explorer and Warmaster also suit the character beautifully. He helps people be awesome like a tactical warlord, while getting involved in the fight like a resourceful warlord, and being a solid defender like a baladin. He's a guy I'd want on my team!
White Raven Crusader should take the White Raven paragon path, no? Other than that, nice build

The actual White Raven PP is geared far too much toward melee-heavy parties for the purpose of a build which I designed to fit in a wide range of party compositions.

It's definitely a good idea for a variant, though, if only to pay more homage to the theme (guess I'll call it "The True White Raven").

Added the True White Raven variant who actually takes the White Raven PP (even if it's only good for melee-exclusive parties).

I also made one global change of retraining Action Surge for Skill Power: Insightful Riposte at Lv. 16, which is an overall more useful +3 attack bonus for this build (not having a lot of burst/blast attacks).
So I am curious why take durable at level 1? I am just wondering because i don't find the extra 2 healing surges all that necessary but I am also new to this and perhaps there is something I am missing? Personally i would grab mighty challenge earlier or heavy blade expertise?
