Or how to make your choice of deity do the most for your channel divinity powers, domains, items, paragon paths, and epic destiny choices.

107612.jpg

Whether you have a deity picked out for character for RP reasons and want to know what you can do with it to make your character work better, you have a character concept and you want to pick whatever deity works best to optimize it, or something in between, then this should help make sorting though the hundreds of options clerics, avengers, paladins, and invokers face a bit easier.  And once you have made your choice this will explore the different ways to enhance your choice through picking your at wills, items, paragon paths and other choices that make your deity work for you.

If you already have a deity picked out and want to know what matches it in the guide, you can use the "find" function of your browser to search out the deity name after opening up the spoiler blocks.

How to get a channel divinity power:

All regular avengers, clerics, invokers, or paladins start with at least 1.  If you hybrid as one of these classes you can get a channel divinity power by using a hybrid talent feat.  A non divine character can use the feat divine channeller.  This only gives access to that particular channel divinity power once a day, but you count as a member of the class for all other prerequisites.  You can then pick up a separate channel divinity feat and use that power each encounter.

Rating Sytem.  (I will try to rate the various feats based on class, don't know how I will organize that)

Red: Don’t take this, there is always something better
Purple: Might be useful sometimes, but there are almost always better options
Black: Good enough
Blue: Good choice and might be the best depending on different factors.
Sky Blue: Almost always one of the best choices

Channel Divinity

I will generally rank channel divinity powers on how useful they are for performing your class role, how commonly you will use them, and occasionally will downgrade powers that provoke OA or if they take more than a minor action.  So ranged powers generally will be slightly downgraded vs close burst powers and use you judgement when I recommend a ranged power since clerics and avengers in particular have both ranged and melee powers.

Classes (Or what you get for free)

classes

Avengers

Divine Guidance This lets allies make a second attack roll against your oath target as an interrupt.

Abjure Undead Kind of like turn undead, but without the feat support and pulls instead of pushes.

Clerics

Divine Favor +1 to your next attack or save.  This is not much, but is useful to every cleric in every encounter.  Can be augmented a little by feats and paragon paths and all clerics get it.

Healer's Mercy A close burst healing power for bloodied allies that also weakens you.  For many clerics, weakened is not a big deal.

Turn Undead Close bust that pushes, damages and immobilizes undead.  Feats can make it target other creatures as well as other tricks.  Uses wisdom and an implement so strength clerics may not be that accurate with it.

Invokers

Rebuke Undead Like turn undead but dazes.  Not as augmentable as turn undead.

Paladins

Divine Mettle Ally gets a save with a bonus

Divine Strength You do extra damage on your next attack.

Paragon Paths

Platinum Mantle (Chromatic Bane) An immediate interrupt +2 untyped defensive boost for you and your allies in close burst when you are hit by an area/close attack.

Censure Devils (knight of the chalice) Weakens Devils.

Settings

I am only going to list those that I think are worth considering for at least one class.

Last Reservation.  You can post now.  Do not expect much in the way of content for a while, but I should have most of the ratings up for clerics fairly soon since I will take that from my own guide.

Off hand I just wanted to mention that you might want to include PPs that aren't necessarily for divine classes, but require you to worship a specific diety. Only example I can think of off the bat is Lightbringer, from EPG, but just a thought.
Take a look at my Handbook: The Pet Store: A Familiar Keeper's Handbook Nacht: "Vecna can do ANYTHING given preptime. He's like an undead lich god Batman."

Traveler's Harlequin, also.
The world is a mess, I just need to... rule it.
Feel free to loot anything you want from the invoker guide. Share and share alike.
I wonder what the name of the graph algorithm that would find the optimal "domain" to worship thus giving you access to the domains of all the gods that belong to the domain chosen.
domain nodes can only have edges to god nodes and visa-versa.  because god nodes are only connected to 3 domain nodes at most, you could limit your search to domain only nodes.  But how to find the domain that, within 2 hops(domain-god-domain) maximizes your options.  I guess you could remove all god nodes by replacing them with an edge from each domain they belong to to all other domains they belong to.  Then we must simply find a maximum independant set.  YAY NP-Complete.

DPR King Candidates 3.0
How much damage should I shoot for?
You're fired : 1 Kills Per 5 Rounds = .2 KPR Fair Striker : 2 Kills Per 5 Rounds = .4 KPR Highly Optimized : 3 Kills Per 5 Rounds = .6 KPR Nerfbat please : 4 Kills Per 5 Rounds = .8 KPR It's OVER 9000!!!!!: 5 Kills Per 5 Rounds = 1+ KPR
DPR? KPR? KP4R? Bless you
DPR = Damage Per round ~= Chance to hit * damage on a hit KPR = Kills Per Round. 1 Kill = 8*Level+24 damage = DPR/(8*level+24) KPNR = Kills Per N Rounds. How many standards can you kill in N rounds?
Thanks for doing the work for me borg.  I will probably encorporate your indexes somehow since I was planning on adding something like what you did.

For anyone else who wants to help, I know the cleric class very well and have that covered.  I know paladins pretty well and probably will tackle their domain at wills next.  Then I will move on to avengers who I know less and finally invokers, who I know the least about and who I have never seen in play.  Anyone has top five deity recommendations for the section in the first post let me know.  For instance Lazer clerics number first entry is going to be pelor: domain feat helps with lance of faith and the channel divinity feats help with radiant vulnerability and the other lets you take healer's mercy in place of turn undead if you want to.

I figure the sun gods will in general be helpful for most divine power source builds, but I might include a top 5 domains as well focusing on the most common at will powers that get buffed by domains (skill for battle clerics since that is good boost to righteous brand, earth because that is a good boost to recovery strike etc.)
Avenger's #1 is Corellon (Power of Skill), #2 is Amaunator (Morninglord), #3 is Tempus (RRoT).  After that... Kord maybe (some of the best Godsworn elements, Power of Strength), but we've really fallen off the beaten path already.

Power of * by At-Will:
Overwhelming Strike: Change, Darkness, Earth, Madness, Poison, Skill, Strength, Storm, Torment, Trickery, Wilderness
Bond of Censure: Destruction, Justice, Luck, Moon, Sea, Tyranny, Undeath, Winter
Bond of Retribution: Fate, Strife, War
Leading Strike: Civilization, Freedom, Hope, Knowledge, Protection
Radiant Vengenace: Arcana, Creation, Death, Life, Love, Sun, Vengeance

Changeling. Fickle Servant. Be a Tempite with Power of skill to make Righteous Brand a basic attack.
I have gotten some work done on this guide, but it is not finished yet.  The domain section is mostly done, but not every thing is rated yet.  I have most of the feats that help CD powers listed.  I have all the paragon paths that help CD, give you a CD, or which require a specific divinity up now as well.  Will try to finish deity/domain related epic destinies and equipment next.
I have an opponent 'concept character' going: an evil Malediction Invoker who worships Tharizdun (under an alias) and Asmodeus (for real).  This allows him to add Power of Madness to his range 10 burst L9 power (which I forget the name of at the moment) and cause everybody to whack themselves with their next attack.  He can make every minion in the room sweep themselves.

Best complements I have yet received

Making it up as I go along:

{BRJN} If I was writing the Tome of Lore, I would let Auppenser sleep. But I also would have him dream. In his dreaming he re-activates the innate powers of (some) mortal minds. Or his dreaming changes the nature of reality - currently very malleable thanks to Spellplague &c. Or whatever really cool flavor text and pseudo-science explanation people react positively to.

{Lord_Karsus} You know, I like that better than the explanations for the Spellplague.

{BRJN} If Bhaal approves of The Joker, does he approve of Jack Nicholson's portrayal or Heath Ledger's protrayal more?

{Stigger} That question is utterly classic, and completely on target.

Prepped ahead of time:

I started the 4e thread "1001 Failed Interrogation Results" (now lost in that great electronic goodnight, alas)

{ADHadh} These are all good and make sense! I just can't come up with something that's not covered here and is not completely ridiculous.

(News bulletin: Updated thread to be posted after I review the 5e DMG)

My 5e characters

Active:

Erevyn Meliamne, Wood Elf Rogue1/Monk2, AL, inspired by "Radar O'Reilly" from M*A*S*H: Perception(max)

Alavos of Kirauma, Half-elf Ancients Paladin8, HotDQ / Tiamat, Warlord themed - now an NPC because I was voted DM for our group !

Characters Ready-to-go:

none at present; gotta work on somebody from below !

Concepts I'm kicking around:

Tiefling Bard - party "face", skillful, future business master (using 3e FRCS background material) and patron to beginning adventurers.

Barbarian w/Tough feat, to be nearly indestructible

"Truenamer" cleric - all spells are Verbal

"Buggy" Wizard - insect flavor on everything.  His DMPC / BBEG version is going to become a beetle version of a Worm That Walks.  (See the 4e MM picture of a Lamia.)  Because lichdom is so cliche.

An observation I've wanted to put into practice: Bane's Tyrannical Transference is, perversely, a pretty good Channel Divinity feat for a Virtue's Touch paladin.

I have been working on this still off and on.  All of the channel divinity powers are up except for some of the recent dragon mags.

The main thing left to do is finish the cheat sheet in the first post and there are some sections in the last post that still need work.

I noticed that in several instances you're missing Pelor. I don't know if you're missing other associated deites:

The original post doesn't list Pelor in the first Hope section, and doesn't list him as associated by hope under the first life and sun sections, whereas "core only" lists list him appropriately. The FR+core lists him as associated by sun under hope, but not as associated by life, then as sun under life but not hope, then correctly under sun. EB+core lists him as associated by life under hope, correctly under life, and only by life under sun.
Likewise, borg285's posts mimic those errors.

quote from 1st post:

This only gives access to that particular channel divinity power once a day, but you count as a member of the class for all other prerequisites.  You can then pick up a separate channel divinity feat and use that power each encounter.

My question:

is there any way to do this to get the channel divinity feat healers mercy?

I think you misread it: I just read divine channeler and it states that if you get another channel divinity you cannot increase the normal amount of uses.

Yes. The other way would be to be a hybrid cleric.

Yes. The other way would be to be a hybrid cleric.

ah i am a hybrid cleric but dont want to give up the pally armor feat.  so i guess neither works, since you cant take a multiclass feat of one of your classes, right?

You can take the Hybrid paragon path instead. That would give you an extra hybrid talent feat, plus
Level 11: Any 7th or lower level encounter
Level 12: Any 10th or lower level utility
Level 20: Any 19th or lower level daily
I'm looking through the guide and have to say I do not feel the guide is very easy to read and see what god gives you what benefits.

I am also very much missing feats like Silvery Glow.
That's because it's a three years old guide that you just re-animated. For me it does exactly what i need it for, basically the "domains" sblock in post 1.
The Complete Collection of Character Build Links still has a link to this so I doubt the thread hasn't been visited or used in all that time just becuase there haven't been any posts.

And seeing there aren't any other guides out there for astral windowshopping I feel this is the best place to point out that the guide is, apparently, outdated.
You may not have noticed it yet, but the point is, that nearly every guide is outdated, some to a high degree. They're only usable for new players who want to learn the basics. The meta-game and build strategies have changed immensely since then. Or when did you see someone using bloodied op or gearing towards daily novas with setup turns the last time?
Refined builds and class advice is given in the CharOP forum, not the build collection. Stumbling upon them requires one to be a regular lurker, at least, tho.
Wait.
4th edition has stopped and there will most likely be no further updates (no official ones anyhow).
You don't think guides like this one should be made up to date so one doesn't have to be a regular lurker to read the best advice on choosing a diety?

If guides like this only help people who already know what to look for and know what is out of date it kinda beats the point in having them in the first place in my opinion.

Ofcourse the best advice for a build is when you have put it all together and the charopboards should be for that, but the boards shouldn't be about answering the same question over and over again when a guide could answer the basics just as easily.
Updating the guides requires that someone with sufficient system mastery has the time and inclination to do so.  Which lets me out since my rule-fu isn't particularly amazing. Tongue Out

The writers of this and many other guides went inactive, or at least don't post anymore.
I mean, i am using the handbooks fairly often, but the regulars with high enough system mastery to cover all that would be needed to update them, possibly don't use them at all. Ever.
Will you pay them for the time they spend to update a guide for you?

People would continue posting the same questions over and over again, even if all the guides would be up-to-date. Simply, because having a perfect tool box still doesn't make you a perfect craftsman.

At least it would be nice not to read the same damn combos over and over again. It's not too hard to use the search function (or just look at the first page of the forum to find at least one!) for a top notch Barbarian hybrid or Ranger|Cleric.
*rolls his eyes*

Ahh yes the famed search function. Well known to find you the answers you seek...... uhhm yeah. :P

I am pointing out this guide could need an update. I am not demanding an update. Will I pay them? No I would not, but I would be quite gratefull to the people who make such guides when I make use of them. Just as I am gratefull to Lordduskblade for his barbarian and ranger handbooks, RuinsFate for his wizard handbook, GelatinousOctahedron for his cleric handbook and Nausicaa for her white mage handbook, to name a few.

While I'm sure your intentions are good, the tone of your first couple of posts comes dangerously close to a demand. That's probably why pink responds the way he does. After all, if you feel a guide can be improved, there's nothing stopping you from doing so yourself.

You can even copy/paste the content of an out-of-date guide to your own thread and start updating it from there. That's what MwaO did with the monk guide, and no one complained about that. Quite the opposite, they were glad someone finally stepped up to update it.
Challenge accepted or atleast partly ;). I mentioned feats so gathered feats. More of them then I thought there would be darn it xD
