An Open Letter to Wizards

Dear Wizards of the Coast,

Before I delve into the matter that concern me, some disclaimers.

The first five minutes I spent with the product made the lifelong gamer/inner-game-design-wannabe in me go ‘A-ha!’.  The next ten minutes were like a chain explosion of eureka’s.  I like many of the decisions made in the production of the rules of this game.  I like them so much I made a blog devoted to the game a few weeks later.  I am no apologist for the latest edition of this venerable game, but I am certainly a fan.

Also, I know that everyone is constantly telling you what you should be doing.  This letter, I’d guess would be added to that choir, but the spirit of this is intended not just to nitpick or find fault, but to be constructive and address an issue that concerns me.  I’ll strive to be honest but not nasty.

Here’s what’s bugging me.  Your published adventures leave me cold.

Inside the Insider: Character Builder full version released!

characterbuilder

Work keeps my grubby mitts off of the full version of the character builder, but later tonight expect another video review of the application.  I’ll be handing this over to my players ASAP so they can track there characters on it.  It should make levelling tons smoother.

On my end, this will be great for mocking up NPCs and overall playing with different builds of the system.  Expect to see 4e characters on the site in the very near future.

Paladin Power Pack #2: Challenges

This Paladin Power Pack is the first half of a set that deals with Divine Challenge.

The powers are all made to work with the paladin’s defining ability in some way.  I’ve felt that there should be more powers that key off of this ability, just like there are abilities for other melee classes that trigger off of marking, Hunter’s Quarry, etc.  I’ve done my best to make these powers compatible with other powers of there level and to fit within the game framework without unbalancing things.

Tell me what you think!

Inside the Insider: Sorceror Preview Levels 1-3

sorcererMore previews and teasers for Insider subscribers today.  This preview is for the sorceror, an arcane striker.  A lot of speculation floated around the directions the sorceror could take, but I’ll break down what actually has been done for you.

The sorceror remains intact in origin from it’s 3.5 roots, i.e. people who use arcane magic from instinctive talent rather than academic study.

Skill Challenge #10: Prison Break: The Armoury

You’ve escaped your cell, now it’s time to get your weapons before making an escape.  So…where did they put your gear?  You’ll need to find your equipment and abscond with it before the enemy catches wind of your plans.

This is the second part in a series of skill challenges that begin with the party imprisoned and breaking their way out of the enemy headquarters.

Open Grave is Dead On

84763

Just got my copy of Open Grave: Secrets of the Undead. It uses a similar format to the Draconimicon, but the content is even better than the Draconomicon.  Their are a lot clever imaginings and additions to the lore of the undead, in addition to some great mechanics and story bits.

Highlights:
